    Ben Smith:

    @BenSmithBBC: #CFC have spent most (£673m - gross) in PL since Jan 03. #MCFC i2nd (£572m), #LFC 3rd (£414m) then #MUFC £352m

Amounts are meaningless without incomings - to give us a figure of Outgoings - Incomes from transfers, a term I refuse to use in this thread.

Downing didnt have a great season but he is given far too much stick. He has averaged 3-4 goals a season his entire career, he wasnt bought to do that. What he was bought for he actually did ok, making chances. He was just behind Suarez for us in the stats and well ahead of others.
was it one, or two assists he got for us last season? :pac:

Carroll will apparently be left out of the squad for the game against Hearts. I really hope we can find a club for him because if we don't then it's clear he will be sitting on the bench this season.

Indeed but we need to factor in our watefulness in front of goal. Suarez was doing far too much and taking shots he never should be taking. Carroll never scored a league goal at Anfield but it wasnt through lack of chances.

Have a read of this comparison of Walcott and Downing, baring in mind Walcott had RVP on fire and we had Carroll.

Another reason its fairly pointless is that it doesnt take into account EPL clubs business with each other, essentially just a movement of the same money.

If A sells B 50m worth over 5 years and B sells A 50m worth over the same period. Basically nothing has been spent but figures will say 100m spent.

Gary Jacob says we are not interested in Afellay, or at least not at the conditions being discussed. I'm guessing Barca are looking for a sweet loan deal - a few million and full wages? He's no Sahin, let's face it...

Oh and goal.com have an "Exclusive" that we are trying to close the Dempsey deal by including some fringe or your players, but doesn't say which players or whether sale/loan.

    Not much of an exclusive...

Prepare for a day of David Craig standing in front of Mike Ashley's helicopter trying not to orgasm every half an hour, tomorrow.

Buck is fairly clear on where Carroll and Col stand

Brendan Rodgers has described Andy Carroll as a 'cover player' but says Liverpool are in no position to have a £35million signing as their third-choice striker.
Carroll joined the Reds in a big-money deal from Newcastle 18 months ago but his future has been the subject of intense speculation since Rodgers took charge of the club over the summer after it became clear he did not fit into the manager's preferred playing style.
However, the situation has become complicated as Liverpool want a good price for a player they spent so much on, while Carroll appears keen to stay at Anfield and fight for a place in the team.
Rodgers has nothing but praise for the 23-year-old's attitude but believes players who are not part of his plans should be looking to move on in search of more regular football.
"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see Andy's been a cover player but he's been excellent in his attitude and acceptance of where he is at," Rodgers said.
"But, as a club, I'm not sure we are in a position to have £35million players as third-choice strikers, or a winger on £5-6m a year.
"There's still a wee bit of thinking time, and it's hard to walk away from here. The ones who want to play will probably look elsewhere, irrespective of finance, because that's their passion."
    Financial repair
Liverpool have been connected with moves for a number of players but Rodgers admits he cannot bring in reinforcements while there are so many fringe men reluctant to leave.
He explained: "The club financially needs repair. So to sign the players linked, unfortunately I don't have the ability to do that - not in this window anyway.
"This is an incredible club and some players, even if you want to move them on, won't walk out.
"I can only ever be straight with players.
"I've made it clear my group will be made up of starting players, cover players who can come in, and development players who can progress.
"If you feature outside of that I will tell you and then it is up to the player what they want - do they want to play football?"

Hmmm. I hadn't thought about it like that.

And I probably never will. :p

Roy Keane had it spot on:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/s/sunderland/6947333.stm
"These so-called big stars are people we are supposed to be looking up to. Well, they are weak and soft.

"If they don't want to come because their wife wants to go shopping in London, it's a sad state of affairs."

Speaking ahead of Sunderland's trip to Birmingham, he told reporters: "I can understand the attraction of people wanting to go to London - if you are talking about Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham.

"If people want to go somewhere else to another football club then fair enough, as long as it is for a footballing reason.

''But there are players going to clubs in London simply because it is London. To me, that is wrong.

"It is not a football move, it is a lifestyle move and those are the type of people you don't want at your club. It is not a problem for me but it is a fact.

"To me, that player is weak because his wife runs his life.

"That happens at the big clubs as well. I could name four big players and clearly their wives and girlfriends are running their lives because they are doing these photoshoots and that kind of stuff.

"They say they are not comfortable doing it and are being dragged along. Well don't do it."

But Keane's fierce determination and dedication to the game made him one of the most successful players in the history of English football.

He revealed: "A couple of years ago I nearly went to Juventus. People spoke to me about Turin and told me Milan would be a nicer place to go.

"I told them I wasn't going for the shops, I am going because it is Juventus.

"If there is nothing to do then find something to do. Someone once told me that people who are bored are boring.

"People who get bored coming to the north-east are bored because they are boring. It is nothing to do with the shops.

"Maybe it is because I am not a great shopper but football has got to be a priority.

"You don't need to live in Manchester or London to be happy. You don't need to be surrounded by expensive shops or fancy cars.

"We have had one or two players this year and their wives are clearly part of the package.

"We had one player this summer who didn't even have the courtesy to call us back because his wife wanted to move to London - and shopping was mentioned."

These spreadsheets get thrown about too often in my opinion. I saw with my own eyes how poorly Downing was last season. There were times last seasons where he might have attempted 10 crosses in a match and connected with none. His dribbling was generally poor too, typically he would beat one player, then run into the next and lose the ball. Whatever you say about Walcott, even if he was completely dreadful in a decent amount of games, he was quality in quite a few as well. The only time that Downing really stood out for me was for the Carling Cup final. Walcott on the other hand was brilliant in a few games, notably in the demolition of Spurs.

A pretty shoddy argument. If you were married and you went home and told the wife you were moving AGAIN and taking maybe a 40% pay-cut, and you are VOLUNTEERING to do this - would she be delighted?

Truth is, we don't know. I am sure he wants to play football, but you can imagine his unwillingless to leave a club like Liverpool...

To be fair i think the "partnership" is some Daniel Levy spin at work. Neither Butraganeo or anyone at RM wanted to comment on the nature of the partnership. Paper speculation says it amounts to:

    - some pre-season friendlies
    - 1st option on loans
    - Closer coaching links

There's no love lost between AVB and Jose anyway to work closer than that. But Levy is very astute - the "partnership" spins well with Spurs fans (if/until RM come in for Bale) and he softened the Modric blow with a swift move for Dembele. Take away Dembele and the partnership and we have a grumpy lot in North London...poor start to season and lost one of their best players.

There you have it from the horses mouth - Comolli and Kenny fcuked the club.

We could have been in the position to make a move for Llorente for about £25m if we hadn't spunked the cash on Carroll

No but i can imagine his unwillingness to leave £5 million a year. In the real world if i had a wife and was on €40k a year leaving to take a £26k a year job, no she wouldn't be happy. If i had banked £8 million in the last 2 years then i'd hope i'd picked a girl who wanted me to be happy and play football!! If only lol :)

Anyway you are right we can't know, only surmise and guess.

Yes please, but unfortunately, I can't see us getting him as we don't have £25 million sitting handy.

Well if we are going to just have opinions then fine, i thought Downing was ok.

From what i was watching there was nobody to cross to a lot of the time, strikers on edge of box and no mids pushing on. And the full story of that is in our scoring record. We created the chances and people did not take them.

Id have taken Johnson over Walcott every day of the week. I think Johnson is on 50k p/w now. Walcott has a supposed offer of 75k and turning it down.

He wants out, has been dropped and has to be sold by Bilbao as only 1 year remains on his contract. City and United don't need him, Chelsea aren't interested, PSG have Ibra, Real have lots of strikers, Barca have Villa back, Bayern have blown their budget on Martinez, Inter and Milan don't have a pot to piss in, Juve would be interested, but I doubt they have the cash.

If we had the £25m to put on the table, I think we would have a great chance at getting him.

Put 5 on the table now and 20 next year if we regain 4th. Simples.
