Spurs players are the most overated in English football always have been. No way Bale deserved it neither did Ginola back in 99.

But Gerrard winning in 2009 was fully deserved, he was brilliant that season for Liverpool.

I think he is out of favour at United as SAF wants a differant type of player in his team. He got what exactly what he bought imo and as it turns out 3/4 years later its not what he wants anymore. Berbatovs agent said a while back that the speed of play United want to have is not what Berbatov does.

108 starts, 41 sub appearances delivered 56 goals. Its a very good record for goals to games. Very similar to Dwight Yorke who will be remebered fondly for his time at United despite his off field behaviour getting him the boot.

I have no idea why other clubs are not after Berbatov unless they see his wage as an obstacle. He has attributes other clubs could utilise in their set ups even if SAF doesn't want to use them/doesn't think they are suited to his side

EDIT: I don't expect you or anyone to agree, its my opinion and I am only dragging it out more as you asked why I though something was the case. If anyone wants to think less of Beerbatov than I do then that is cool with me.

Good post and your right you are entitled to your opinion. I'm not trying to enforce my opinion on anybody I'm just sharing my views.
ya it just has to be his wages, his age and the fact that United are probably looking for around 10million for him.

lots of clubs have s*it strikers, signing him and Owen would make great business for clubs like Villa, Wigan (moses money to be spent) and even the likes of Spurs and Everton.

Berba fits so many teams, it really must be down to money.

I don't think it is down to money. He says he wants to play football so why not just take a cut and go and play somewhere? He doesn't need any money I'm sure.

Maybe if Nani scored a hatrick in one of his clubs biggest games of the modern era they would have said all those lovely things about him too

    It was one game.

Nani's stats are far superior to Bale's in the two seasons since then.

16 goals and 11 assists for Bale, 17 goals and 24 assists for Nani in the league despite him playing 900 minutes less than Bale in that period.

Players should be judged on the back of a whole season and not one game.

If memory serves much of the " WTF?" surrounding that was Bale had been on a serious drought in the run in to that award while Nani was still firing on all cyclinders.

And I'm struggling to think of a year where a foreigner won it over a Brit and it wasn't deserved, unlike the many occasions Brits have won awards over deserving foreigners.

Football writers award last 5 years

Scott Parker and Gerrard very undeserving

English PFA young player of the year last five years

Wilshere for one performance against Barca?
Ashley Young in 2009? This is the first season Rooney scored over 25 goals in the EPL, the first time done by an Englishman in 10 years : /

The PFA player of the year is a bit more realistic.

But there is obvious British favourtism when it comes to the PFA and Football writer awards.

And its only in the last ten years UEFA/FIFA finally removed its very evident embargo of providing the world footballer of the year award to an EPL player. Since 1991, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to win the World footballer of the year ( now Balondor) whilst representing an EPL club.

Lampard, Henry, Beckham and Bergkamp are the only other premier league players that have ever made the top 3. Go figure ;)

Out of curiosity who do you think was more deserving to win thoses awards on each of those occasions mentioned?

No I agree. My reply was slightly sarcastic hence the face thing. It obvioulsy didn't come off that way.

Your right though, a player should be judged over a season and the votes should be cast at the end of the seaon. Not half way through it.

Oh right. You should really work on that sarcasm or else drop it entirely :P. It doesn't really come off on here unfortunately ha.

Bit on the spot question, but I remember thoroughly disagreeing with these

Rooney was pretty sensational in 2009 and I thought he deserved the young player of the year.

I've no idea why Gerrard won the award of football writers, Vidic put on a dominant display all season that brought United the title and a champions league final. And I think most regarded him as the outstanding player that year.

Evans has been named in the NI squad :(

I'm doing well to remember the match on Saturday let alone a few years ago so I couldn't argue or agree with you.

Zenit are now 2/1 to sign Nani, Spurs at 8/1 and AC & PSG at 16/1.

I'd fancy Spurs to get him. Cash from the sale of Modric plus AVB connection.

Not overly disappointed this time tbh, will get him some match fitness so he'll be sharper coming back and we need another fit centre half back playing and Carrick back in midfield.

as long as he doesnt get injured, thats positive. he is not injured at the moment, so the reason he didnt play on sat is lack of match practice.

he missed pre season dont forget, so needs all the game time he can get. hopefully JOnes and Rio will be back also once the international break is over.

any idea if the England squad is announced and if it is, how many have we in it? would expect Young, Carrick, Cleverly and Welbeck to be in it anyway and then we have 3 lads injured.

Didn't mean my last edit to suggest I don't care what you think. Just wanted to be clear I wasn't dragging the topic out to be contrary to your opinion but rather just answer a question. I am fine with anyone not impressed with Berbatovs time at United, sure even the manager doesn't seem too impressed!

I know he needs games but I just hate when the player is coming back from injury and has not even played for the club yet and is getting called to play for the international team!

For some reason I always feel they are going to break down while away

I hate to start an argument about a Liverpool player in the United Thread but Gerrard was frickin awesome in 2009, scored and created loads of goals playing just behind Torres.

Even the most biased United Fan can surely see that, if you have the memory that is. So what if they didnt win the league, Rooney won it in 2010 and United didnt win the league either.

    Credit were credit is due!

Yep - that was an awesome year for Gerrard and I really couldn't understand why anyone would look to move away from the Torres/Gerrard partnership up front, even if it meant Gerrard wasn't being played as a CM as his 'world class' CM ability seemed to dictate he should be.

That is absolutely fine, my memory could well be getting skewered its a few years ago. I just thought I remember Vidic being absolutely tremendous and getting plaudits everywhere and then going "wtf".

could well be the year your describing which would make sense why he was up there, is that the year Liverpool finished second?

I am not too sure if it was a factor but wasn't Vidic flying in 2009 to the point of the 4-1 at Old Trafford. The game was in April and I know that the voting can be earlier (depending on the award) but that might have been an influence

    Well especially when the club:

    1) Nursed him back to health using their medical facilities
    2) Pay his wages
    3) Will continue to care for him throughout the rest of the season

He shouldn't be in the squad to be honest. It's a joke.

I see The Sun are reporting that Utd are ready to sell Rooney now, just wondering if there are any other sources reporting this or is it just The Sun.

£50m apparently but its saying City are the only ones that could afford it, I for one cant make my mind up if this would be good or bad, I would hate it if he went to City as he would improve their team which makes me think I want him at Utd.

Or if Madrid or someone else paid £50m for him couldnt Utd replace him handy enough? Or is he irreplacable?

I cant decide, although I would prefer if he didnt leave and defo dont want him going to City.

Not sure if you follow the journo's much but I'm sure the author of that piece is Neil Custis, brother of another journalist Shaun Custis (who sometimes appears on Sunday Supplement).

Both are utter tossers and both have bans from Ferguson's Friday conferences for the foreseeable future. There are actually some hilarious quotes from Ferguson on this (will try and dig them out)

In other words, he is an unreliable journo who has often penned anti-United pieces and he also works for The Sun which should only be used for the images on page three and as a last alternative to bog roll.

Vidic had a very good season alright, the voting is done end of Jan, start of Feb I think?? The game was in mid-march were he got sent off but he also got sent off at anfield.

Gerrard deserved it though but I think Vidic won the Prem League award with Giggs getting the other one.

If I was writing for the sun and had no real stories to submit - Rooney to city for 50 million as a possibility is the exact story I come up with.

you don't need any facts or sources so can use RVP and Kagawa signing to show Rooney may not be as important as he used to be. His injury can be used to say he is getting on and going to suffer more injuries due to the way he plays. Guess the fee would be around 50 mill and that City or Madrid are the only ones who could afford it. Maybe PSG but they are french and the sun don't like the french so i'd leave them out.

The "contemplating selling Rooney" is probably the biggest load of bollox I've read from the rags in a long....long....time

Thats starting to ring bells, Torres raped him didnt he?

(And ironicly, didnt Graham Souness get in trouble for a comment similar to the above?)

If we dont go for Dembele and he goes to Spurs I think serious questions need to asked of SAF transfer policy. From what I have read and seen of Dembele he ticks everything as a player needed to improve the United midfield. I think we have waited a long time for player like him to come along. I feel we will miss out on him and he'll be a massive success at spurs.

Both the Rooney and Nani stories are press sensationalisim drummed up to increase circulation on the back of the flimsiest sign of discontent in the team.

Nobody really knows whats going on with SAFs relationship to these players. I'm predicting both players to stay. The Rooney story is utter tosh. He may not be numero uno now but him leaving? No way.

The game was March, you are right. I will bow to your better knowledge on the award winners for that season.
