But how much debt was being put onto the club in them times? and how close were we to going into administration under H&G?
Is that really the road we want to go down again?

We didnt get into the position under them off the back of players fees or wages. We got in that position off the back of ridiculous financial sector lending to those owners. They bought us on the credit card and the credit card got maxed. When the money dried up the banks called in and took over. Interestingly, the banks, or the british tax payer, didnt mind us paying wages and even increasing wages as that was a running cost and clearly sustainable in their view. They only stopped outright investment in players ie, xfer fees. Anything purchased had to be funded by sales at that time.

In short, it had nothing to do with players fees/wages why we went close to admin.

That'd be great money for a player who would now be about 7th choice for lfc centre mid position!!
I think he could do a job for a championship team so not bad business on both sides.

€4M, the fee being touted is £3M...a fair price, which is a rarity in football these days.

Sky Sports reckon 5 clubs are in:
Sky Sports understands Bolton are one of five clubs chasing Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing.

Premier League trio Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa and Southampton as well as Wolves are all thought to be keeping tabs on Spearing's situation.

I said weeks ago spearing would be hunted by pl clubs and I was laughed at. People said he was only championship level. Its amazing how blinkered some folk are when blinded by their negativity..

Perhaps, but in fairness there's a reasonable chance that the clubs he's being linked with will either be relegated (or at best in a relegation battle) this season

Barcelona looking to loan Afellay according to reports this morning and apparently we've already made an offer.

Both of us will have to include wages in any true assessment of where its going, you cant just not include them and just use gross xfer money. Torres and Mascherano's wages could have covered every player's wages Kenny brought in for all we know. All we can say with some fact really is that the wages have come down massively for the next 12 months. Thats great, but dont expect success off the back of it.

Wages should come down, we wont have much profit on players though, I'd say last years accounts might still show a loss though, we'll see. The club also has to be ready for the cost of a new stadium or refurbishment. Ideally we'll get a big naming rights deal to help but it'll still involve new loans more than likely.

Put it this way, we've restructured the wages, got rid of most of the dross except Cole, but the replacements we brought in last Summer and Carroll have hardly been successes. That's the problem. The owners never said they'd be big spenders, always said we'd try to be self-sustaining.

Spearing isn't as bad as people make out and he will do a fine job for any of the teams that he is being linked with. The problem he has at Liverpool isn't so much that he isn't good enough to be a backup player, the problem is that he doesn't fit into our passing system. If we get £3 million, then I don't mind letting him go, especially considering that Shelvey has shown some decent form.

Prob going a bit far considering his injurys recently but hed be a decent addition on loan alright.

Still think Dempsey is the most likely signing before the window closes

    Thanks for sharing!

Apparently we were talking to him and Tello at the same time, we got pushed back, so we moved quickly for Assaidi. They are similar players for a similar position. I wouldn't say no, but the focus has to be on a goalscorer...

Downing would be going further down the pecking order. Looks like his future at the club is coming to an end too if true.

Well we got pushed back as Barcelona didn't seem interested in loaning him at that stage but it seems now he's certain to go on loan. Couple of sources (Marca, mundodeportivo) all reporting that Barcelona are in talks with a few English clubs at the moment with Spurs pushing the hardest.

Makes sense, Spurs need to bring in some creativity. I still think they are short a striker as well, hence their bid for Willian.

    Something will happen there...

I don't think we need a striker unless we're definitely selling Carroll. A goalscoring winger would do us wonders though IMO.

Unless the winger you're talking about is a small little fella from Argentina or a greasy fella from Portugal, you're wrong imo.

Emphasis on 'need'. I'd love a goal-poaching, cunning, fox-in-the-box selfish bastard who'll get us 20+ goals a season spearheading the attack but time is running out and we may be reliant on loanees.

If we were only bringing in one more player this window I'd prefer a wide player.

They are 100% gambling on the notion that FFPR will stick. If it doesnt stick there will be a for sale sign on the Shankly gates.

Until they do stick, which many believe they wont to any great degree, we will go nowhere fast.

    Anytime,

ok so yes he might not be the out and out goal scorer that we probably need and he has only started 20 games for Barca over the last 2 seasons but a nice loan deal where we pay only a part of the 80 grand a week he is on then it could be a very nice addition to out whole attacking abilities.

I think Borini could be that player, in the longer term. But given his relative inexperience, we had better buy Huntelaar just in case...

You happy for us to sell Carroll to bring in this striker?

    I'd prefer not to tbh.

Unless we were getting £20m & bringing in a top class player. Huntelaar or someone of that ilk. If we loan Carroll or sell for a ridiculous cut price deal & sign someone like Dempsey only. I'll be unhappy & feel a club like ours should have the resources & finances to have both.

However, it's the managers call, if he wants to roll that dice, it's on him.

Aside from the financial constraints, I think front 3 options of Carroll, NEW STRIKER, Borini, Suarez, Sterling, Assaidi, Downing is a little bloated imo. Moreso if we sign Dempsey or another wide player. Moreso again if Gerrard is ever used as part of front 3.

You'd wonder how much game time Carroll would get. I think he would be third/fourth choice for that central berth. We would end up selling for less than 10 million next summer
