Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) also sometimes know as Western Martial Arts is the study of the fighting systems and techniques of Europe from approximately the 13th century onwards. HEMA has been in existence for several decades though in Ireland it has a very small group of enthusiasts. As part of an effort to promote the study of these Martial Arts a workshop is being held, Introduction to German Longsword , on Sunday the 9th of September in Trinity Comprehensive School, Main Stree, Ballymun, Dublin 9.

This is a follow up to the Sword and Buckler Workshop held earlier this year which featured in the last issue of Irish Fighter Magazine. The longsword was a double edged two-handed weapon used across Europe from the 13th Century to approximately the 17th Century and is in many ways similar in use to the Japanese Katanna.

This workshop will take participants through the fundamentals of German Longsword to a point where they will get a good feel for the weapon. If they already have experience with the Longsword this is a great opportunity to refine techniques.

By the end of the day you should walk away having experienced the manner in which this weapon was used as well as being equipped with drills and exercises to help you practise the fundamentals. The major and some of the minor guards, as well as basic strikes and some of the more advanced or Master Strikes will be covered, often with accompanying flow drills. These can be used in their own right or as a supplement to other training.
There will be sparring too for those with the appropriate safety equipment (some limited spare safety equipment may be available)

I will be teaching the workshop. I am an instructor in a Dublin based Historical Reenactment group, having over 6 years experience in Historical Reenactment Combat. Previous to this I studied sports fencing for over 3 years in college so I have extensive experience with various forms of European Weapons. For the last year I have been studying the German Longsword system as developed by Master Johannes Liechtenauer who was a German Fencing Master in the 14th century who wrote the first manuscript on the Art of the Fencing with this weapon. This study has involved working with other HEMA enthusiasts in Ireland as well as attending several events overseas training with Instructors with decades of experience from all over the world.

The cost of the event is €30. There will be a some spare training equipment available but you are encouraged to bring your own. Nylon or steel longswords are great, but bokens and shinai are equally good substitute equipment.

If you have any questions on the workshop or HEMA in general please don't hesitate to ask or send me a PM if you'd prefer.

Looking forward to seeing you there and make sure you bring a friend!

    Neil Byrne

That's great to hear. If you're looking for a nylon longsword I would recommend this site

    http://www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/rawlings-proline-xtreme-sparring-long-sword-p-3244.html?osCsid=b2048c011136a5fd08b8c686cb9b26d3

They are pretty decent guys and are the cheapest site I've found that do nylon HEMA longswords shipped to Ireland.

have you had much response to this post: is there a club/society i can join?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭NeilJ

We have had a pretty strong response on Facebook and I reckon based on what people have said to me that we will have a nice number of people at the workshop.

I am part of a Dublin based reenactment group which has been branching into HEMA for a year now. We are still in the process of formally setting up a seperate HEMA club (for insurance reasons!) but we train in a hall in Ballymun on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:30 if you're interested.

For more information PM me though as I don't think the mods like threads set up just to promote groups/clubs and I don't want this thread getting hijacked by me trying to recruit new members! :)

Well don't stop that telling all your friends.

And if they don't have a longsword bring a shinai or boken along instead

Nothing right now in Dublin. There is an event planned at the end of the month in Letterkenny.

Our group however trains in Ballymun on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:30 in a hall behind the Topaz station near Ikea if that's any help

    Hi there Neil;

How are you? All is well I hope. Apologies for not being in touch sooner, but it was a very busy 2013. I was wondering are you still holding the classes on Wednesday evenings?
I wasn't able to attend due to a number of factors, but am available again and rearing to get back into the swing of things... if you will pardon a rather unfortunate pun.

Still training every Wednesday. Our hall is located behind the Topaz station near Ikea. It doesn't appear on any maps but we do have a GPS coordinate for google maps on our Facebook page to help. You can find us at www.facebook.com/DublinHEMAClub

    Hi Neil,

That's great to hear. I may have a new member to come along too. A german lady that I work with. She is an archer, and she also does kick-boxing, but she has said that HEMA sounds very interesting.

Hope to see you before the end of the month, failing that I will make it in november.

    Kris
