Some info on this Kilkenny Landmark

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the attached location close to Clara Co. Kilkenny? I know its some type of ancient burial ground its visible from the main Kilkenny-Carlow Road. From looking at Google maps access seems to be via private farmland. Does anyone know if there is public access to it etc. Would like to get up and take some photos if at all possible

can you provide any more info? . townland name. GPS cords ?

As with most similar historical sites in Ireland, access is through private property (the site itself is probably private property). There is often no public right of way so you should ask the landowner's permission, at least out of courtesy. He/she may even be able to tell you more about its history.

I grew up in Gowran. so I passed that site at the 3 mile cross regularly. The only thing I can tell you is if you cut the tree down you will have very bad luck for a long long time, I'm not superstitous but I like the tree on the top, it looks good

The locals call it Crook. Some one cut one of the branches off it a couple oy years ago. Couldnt tell you who owns the land.

Doesn't sound like the most interesting of landmarks around, much more interesting large stone circle up around Tullahought on the hill overlooking the village and its easy get to as its part of a trial kilkenny and also a passage grave just a few km away in Knockroe (it collapsed and was only discovered around 1980 afaik...lots of stone carvings though)

Oh and like Newgrange the passage grave was illuminated by the winter and summer solstices,

I actually got to see Knockroe at sunset on the shortest day with a good clear sunset, it was magical.

I laughed when I read the bit about being condemned to marriage if a girl got you up there, all very pre-divorce Ireland!
