Let them have their lovely girls contest but why in the name of Christ is it on national television over 2 nights?

I don't know about that but I do know this really was cringeworthy!:

How dare you imply that this demonstration of the arts is cringeworthy.

I miss the time of my life when I'd never seen that.

If you take out the stage Oirishness of this event, it does generate and lot of interest in Irish communities overseas and the subsequent tourism income generated in the Kerry area is very welcome.

Any event has to have a USP, a unique selling point, and while there are many events such as Miss World, Miss Universe, etc. the uniquely Irish flavour of this event makes it stand out from the rest.

As people living in Ireland, we may find it all a bit twee but that is missing the point, this is the Irish diaspora celebrating their connection with this country and it would be wrong to denigrate or dismiss this.

What annoys me about the Rose of Tralee is that it seems to be touted as the 'intelligent' beauty pageant.

    No.

Any woman of intelligence, no matter where she lives, or her nationality, would not enter into such a 'competition'.

Also what really annoys me is the way the girls in the competition just love each other so much; best friends forever and all that crap... oh god it's just cringetastic.

The worst part is the fact that the women involved allow themselves to be questioned by that twerp.

It is Oirishness at its worst. Its like themed Ireland in Ireland. Hopefully one day one of the 'roses' (eurghhhh) will stick her two fingers up at the geriatrics in the audience and kick him in the scrote........

So they're all dumb, are they? All these people you haven't met, nor know anything about? They're all dumb because they're doing something you don't personally want to involve yourself in.

That's a mature and respectable outlook you've got yourself there. I'd say people fecking flock to you, right?

I find that uniquely Irish pomposity of it it mildly entertaining. Its like a conservative, lovely girls pageant hosted by a condescending bogger asking banal, typically Irish questions like so hows college treating you? So you're just back from Australia? Oh the boyfriend wont be happy with that! Looking forward to seeing the obligatory primary school-ish Jigs and out of tune singing, and ''ah but shure isnt she lovely anyway''. Ive got my popcorn at the ready.

Probably because it's an excellent opportunity for some drinking games.

    "I spent 3 months in <disadvantaged country>" - DRINK!
"My ambition is to be a social worker" - DRINK!
"I'd like to say hello to xxx at home" - DRINK!
    "My mother/father/grandparent/sibling died recently" - DRINK 3!!
Daithi O'Se makes an inappropriate remark - for hardcore drinkers only, or you'll be paralytic in half an hour...

Job is primary school teacher or nurse - DRINK!
