I just think we need to be more intense in defence..This year we gave teams far too much room and space to get scores, we were opened up at ease too much this year i.e.sligo. I agree some fellas need to go just not good enough.. Mullholland dos need time and some people calling for his head is a joke...where do we go from there ?.. Although this year was a disaster i just have a feeling that we will see more stability in the team next year and we will start to believe again...maybe im being a bit too optimistic..? Finally it wasnt that long ago when mayo lost to Longford in the qualifiers and seemed like the end of the world but James Horan came in and he brought stability..We just need time..

Just heard word that Cyril Donnellan broke his arm and is out 4 the remainder of the championship - can anyone confirm this?

Be a disaster, particularly as his form in this c'ship was superb. Team were playing a challenge in Gort this morning AFAIK. Also word going out that some players were to be added to panel and some more cut. This may all be supposition so wouldn't say more until confirmed.

Would be horrible to lose him for the season if true. Was superb this year so far and against Clare and Cork last year too. Tore KK apart with ease.

3 weeks is surely not enough recovery time unfortunately. Wonder who'll get the nod?

Jonathan Glynn, Tadgh Haran or Davy Glennon I'm thinking. A real pity to lose him. I would say irreplaceable in his current form. Will help dampen expectations a bit though.

Or James Regan; would guess Conor Cooney be redeployed to the HF line. Injury disruption is last thing management need now but at least they have time for contingencies.

Galway in my opinion are still the 2nd best side in Connacht. (Mayo 1st).

As a Galwayman, I could not disagree more.
Even the players know that at this stage.
The sad thing is, we have the talent to be the best in Connacht on a consistant level.

On a national level, Galway football revives itself every few decades in fits and spurts.

A glance at our All Ireland successes confirm this -

Since Limerick won the first All Ireland Final in 1887, it took us 38 years to clinch the title (Albeit without kicking a ball in a final in 1925).

We won in it our own right twice in the thirties - 34 & 38.

Then an 18 year gap before winning again in 56, before waiting another 8 years for the much celebrated 3 in a row team to lift the cup.

Then came the 32 year long Connacht drought until we rescued Sam once again in 98, before going back to collect him 3 years later.

That was 11 years ago now and I'm glad I was young enough to be in Croke park in 98 and 2001, because it could be along time before I see Galway Football there again in September in for a long time to come.

Amazingly, after 125 years of the Championship, Galway are still ranked in third place of All Ireland winners.

Perhaps this is why a lot of people put us on a pedestal we don't really belong on.

Its a nice stastic to have considering Kerry and Dublin are so far ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to All Ireland honours, but I fear it will be surpassed by, Meath, Cork or even Tyrone before Galway have the chance to extend it.

    I hope I'm wrong.

Emmm... 34 & 38. Surprisingly Galway have won Sam Maguire more often than Dublin; also of interest, Galway have contested an AI final in every decade. I hope this decade isn't the exception, but it's hard to see any immediate escape from our prolonged spell in the doldrums. OTOH, apart from Kerry, football doesn't tend to be monopolised by any one county for too long. And with the current Kerry team in apparent slow decline, Tyrone in well decline, the current Cork and Dublin teams aren't going to dominate for too long more either, there may be room for a team to emerge within the next few years and stake a claim to an AI. We need to get our act together and start producing better players, and not over-coached ones either.

Don't think Glennon would be moved out to half-forward for it myself. More than likely Glynn starts there or Harran gets a go. Both of them impressed me so far but it's a big step-up. Regan is a utility man of sorts though so maybe he's the man they want in for Cyril.

They will get it right, and hopefully they do.

The Connacht championship is never the same without a Mayo v Galway game. Its like Cork and Kerry in Munster.

Not with the current group of players. Too many of them have failed once too often at this stage and a major clearout is needed. The likes of Blake, O'Donnell, Coleman, Bergin, Burke, Higgins, Armstrong and even the great PJ need to be culled. In Joyce's case simply because he's done enough and we need to move on now with a new team. I'd say he's had enough of it anyway.

To play open expansive football you need the players. If a team was good enough at it then yes you can play that way, but if not you end up like Galway.
On top of this they need to spend the winter in the gym which isn't likely with the present crop. More of the same.

True. It was fine playing that way when we had great players like Fallon, Donnellan and De Paor to do it with, but we don't have Ja Fallons and Michael Donnellans anymore.

I wouldn't want to see Galway adopt an overly negative approach but there's no doubt we need to be a bit more defensive and our ball-winning ability in the middle third needs to improve dramatically if we're to have any chance. That's one area where we've been consistently wiped out in recent years. We haven't had a midfielder worthy of a county jersey since Kevin Walsh retired.

And it's not just the midfielders to blame either, in the modern game midfielders don't win that much clean ball anyway. You need your half back and half forward lines to be like vultures pouncing on every loose ball going and that hasn't been happening. That coupled with our inept midfield means we almost always get killed in that middle third area unless meeting very poor opposition (e.g Ros in Hyde Park)

Do we actually know for sure that Donnellan is injured? There seems to be no official word anyplace about this, and this is the only thread that has raised this possibility.

True that! One of the most underrated players in the country at the moment, well, going by his current form he's probably on his way to an all-star nomination! It'd be fair to question his consistency though, like most of the team bar Joe Canning :-P Donnellan would be a huge loss to us, his pace once he gets going is frightening! Gaillimh Abú!!

Confirmed: According to GBFM he broke a bone in his hand and management are hopeful he'll make the Semi Final. I doubt he will though.

Alas, that is no longer the case.

Dublin have won the Sam Maguire 9 times since 1928, (the year the cup was first presented). Galway have lifted the trophy 8 times since then.

Shame if he can't make it. Has been playing like a man possessed all year. Still Johnny Glynn would be a very capable replacement who has impressed in every cameo he has had this year. Some man to catch a ball and a massive workrate

Hopefully this is true and he's going to be fit enough to play

Was near the touchline and himself Glennon and Donnellan must've been waiting for 10 minutes each to come on whereas Cork made free-flowing changes.

Unfortunatly wasn't strong enough - they lost to KK by 5 points (I think the scorline was 0-21 to 1-13). Apparently a lot of frees conceded by Galway.

Gee forgot that. Yes hopefully they do the business. 2 changes I believe. Young Burke (brother of kenneth, David and Darragh) is in for Conor Cooney's younger brother, his clubmate

Hard luck to our minors today number 4 was my man of the match the sending of of Paul Kileen was a total disgrace the first yellow wasent even a free it was a beauty of a shoulder and the second one they were both holding each other i think it could have gone either way if he hadent been sent off

Disgraceful alright and at a pivotal enough stage. We were the worse side probably but awful unfair on a young lad to be ridiculously sent off like that.

Hopefully our under 21s have a bit of success next week very strong side

Disgrace of a sending off, for a young lad and all. I actually thought he was very impressive up until that, he's built like a bloody tank! Some shoulder he hit as well, almost killed yer man :pac:

Killeen is some player. that's his third year on the minor panel and will make the senior panel for sure next year!

That was a bloody lovely shoulder. Need to see more of that, zero complaints. Giving a free never mind a booking for that is a disgrace.

bad old weekend on the hurling front but roll on next week :)
