    • Spiders spun cobwebs as they escaped rising flood water

Scared as I am of the damn things, that makes me feel really bad! They only get killed now if they're crawling on me or my bed, then it's just panic.

Was that Cambodia? Feckers eat anything that moves there.

    Deep fried spiders, mmmm...

It was indeed. They actually taste ok, legs are crispy, body has a bit of a dry/powdery texture to it, maybe the ones I had were a little over fried.

I like them. They're good company and they get rid of other more annoying insects. I currently have a moth infestation and I'm sure there would be a lot more of them destroying my clothes if there wasn't so many spiders around.

I don't like killing anything so spiders save me the trouble.

I was taking a walk in a forest once when a mosquito bit me. I brushed him away with my hand and he flew directly into a spiders web.

Planning to buy stamps? Watch it. One of the new Irish 55c wildlife stamps has an Irish raft spider (dolomedes fimbratus) almost leaping out of the stamp at you!

If you put it on a letter, the recipient will probably think you mean them harm!

Excellent. Must get some for sending out invoices next month...

    I have one of these.

I've handled her & let her crawl across my face before. Still feel uneasy though. Oddly enough regular large house spiders still freak me the hell out.

Oh and if you're wondering why I have a tarantula when I hate spiders, my brother got it for me as a Christmas present... prick...

As I'm an armchair arachnologist (used to be arachnophobic, know your enemy and all that), I'll clear up a few misconceptions about these guys (Tegenaria Duellica).

Giant House Spider is the commone name, and the clue is in the name. They don't come in from the outside, they are indoor spiders and can only live indoors. The reason they are more visible these days is that August - October is mating season, so they're looking for lurve. That's right, they've been in your house this whole time. Some people gather them up and leave them outside, thinking it's nicer than killing them. It's not, they won't survive long outside due to the inconstant temperature an unfamiliar environment.

Random facts: they are the fastest spider in the world (which will scarcely surprise anyone who has seem them at full pelt, the human eye cannot track the movement at all). Wikipedia says their legspan can reach 75mm, personally I think this is conservative as I found one whose legspan approached that of the stuffed tarantula on my wall. They are heavy and tough (they can be heard scurrying across wooden floors) but really limber so can squeeze into and under the tightest spaces
But they only live in giant houses? Thank god, my house is quite small.

This cheeky chap showed up in a mates room in Lebanon

"It was a jumper" he said.

    Sleep well.

    Cheeky Chap

That corner belongs to him now. He can keep it.

I actually dont mind spiders at all. Keeps more irritating fcukers away.
Although a couple have taken me by surprise in the past. Like that big fcuker that decided to land on my neck when I was going to sleep -_-

One of my young lads is over 6" 3" 18 years old & frightened to death of spiders & bugs, I blame the mom for passing on the phobia :D

Even a small bug in the bathroom & he's freaking out, size of him, compared to a bug LOL, he sounds like a screaming victim in a Hammer House of Horror movie

I actually don't mind them, they keep other insect numbers down at least! :pac:

Spiders aren't insects, 'other arthropods' would be correct

This has been proven to work on mosquitos but I know from personal experience that spraying citrus/citronella oil does not repel spiders one bit

I'm told that having a cat is useful.

Also, there are spider catchers such as this one on the market:

OP you're afraid of a few harmless spiders. So you have some irrational fear? Grow a pair!

I heard chestnuts work but I cannot confirm. The thing is that spiders have no sense of smell, they can taste with their feet however.

My friends have a partricularly predatory cat and subsequently their house is free of these type of spiders

Don't know about that. My cat catches them and brings them into the house to play with

You know what? These spiders are similar looking to the Hobo spider (except Hobo spiders live outside). You want to see a Hobo spider bite?

So, being wary of these type of spiders is actually quite intelligent

And some of the bigger ones do bite. They are not venomous but it's not pleasant!

    <nitpick>
All spiders are venomous, whether or not the venom is harmful to humans is another matter

Hate to upset you even more but have any of you seen the False Widow Spiders, they are everywhere in south dublin. Steoteda Nobillis they are also known as, I have Arachnophobia. I noticed one in my shed one night around 6 years ago and realised it was not normal. I actually thought it was a black widow. I did some research and found what it was.
