Buying a SSD For My Desktop

    Hi all,

    I am looking to buy a SSD for my desktop current hard drive acting up unfortunately not to sure what to be looking at my motherboard only supports up to 3Gb/s most drive that I can see is 6gb/s its a Asus 4N68T V2.

    Just thinking might upgrade my MB first to a 6Gb/s slot and then get the SSD. Would I be wise in doing this?

    You could get a 6Gb/s SSD and upgrade the interface later if you wanted, it would still work at 3Gb/s.

    Does my MB not need to support SATA 3 in order to do that? how would I check it does support SATA 3 :confused:

    Forget what I said there. :P Some SSDs requires a SATA 3 how do I check what my is?

    I've never seen any SSD (or hard disk for that matter) that requires a 6Gb/s interface, they've always been backwards compatible. I know 100% that the OCZ Vertex 3/Agility 3 work fine on 3Gb/s despite being 6Gb/s native.

    What motherboard do you have?

    That board has a 3Gb/s interface (commonly referred to as SATA II), but I've never seen a device which requires the higher speed interface. You could get a 6GB/s SSD now and get a controller card or new motherboard later.

    3Gb/s drives don't work on some VIA 1.5Gb/s controllers but that was due to a compatibility issue with the controller rather than the drives themselves. Maybe this is what you were thinking of? :)
