Has anyone got some examples where inter-village, inter-parish, inter-county rivalry is pretty bitter and entrenched or is it all just a laugh?

Mount Misery in Waterford is interesting enough.

    http://www.munster-express.ie/local-news/paint-rivalry-on-mount-misery-%E2%80%98flagstone%E2%80%99-set-to-continue/
The ‘paint war’ between Waterford and Kilkenny hurling fans for the ‘flag stone’ on Mount Misery took an unsavoury turn last weekend, when a suspected third party embarked on a spot of defacing.

The latest Waterford flag to be painted on the rock, as exclusively reported in last Friday’s Weekender Edition, has been replaced by a rather crude depiction of manhood.

Answering the call to respond to last Friday’s story, a member of the Kilkenny painting crew claimed that even die-hard Deise fans would prefer the black and amber flag to the current ‘artwork’ on display.

“It might be a bit funny for some people, but it’s not a particularly nice thing to have everyone looking at,” said ‘Charlie’, who didn’t reveal his true identity during a Monday morning phone call. “It’s rude, let’s cut to the chase on it.”

In response to claims made by Deise fan ‘Tom’ that the Waterford painting job was “only a bit of fun”, Charlie queried Tom’s integrity over the ‘battle for Mount Misery’.

“There’s plenty of space there for two flags to be painted,” said Charlie. “But when the Waterford lads decided to paint over a Kilkenny flag that had been there for years, a few of us on this side of the Suir didn’t see anything fun about it.

    *Edit

This is not "petty" either. It's serious fucking business.

Nope - it's certainly not a story. I don't want to disclose the location so as not to embarrass the denizens of these two villages.

Tell the truth, the Tipp lads gave you some advice then took you up to the Graves of the Leinstermen and showed you what happened to recalcitrant tourists and football hooligans.

    Scary, huh?

Since when is it normal for a person from Dublin to be called a Dub? People from Galway aren't called Gal's, Kilkenny folk aren't known as Kil's, Kerry natives aren't referred to as Ker's etc

Although I am in favour of people from Limerick being called Limes.

There's nothing strange or pathetic about a rivalry between two rival teams supporters, especially two local teams. This rivalry can often appear in people with only a passing interest in the sport, or none at all, and is part of the local banter.
Sports rivalry and local rivalry isn't unique to Ireland!! Some posters around here seem to think that everything they percieve to be negative, is exclusive to Ireland.
Something that is much mores strange to me is the fierce rivalry and bitterness between Irish supporters of English sports teams, which they have no real connection to! Whats that all about?

    Always the way
I guess some people just don't know much about the rest of the world.

Maybe they should check out the rivalry between Canadian hockey teams , or European soccer clubs.
Surely they can't be unaware of the actual blood-letting that can occur between English soccer fans, yet they go on about a "bit of banter" between rival GAA folks.
