Making the switch from film SLR to digital. I have a Canon EF 17-35 2.8 - about 10 years old or so. Can I use it with the Canon digital SLRs (e.g., a 40D)? I figure I can, but I thought I would check...

    Hi,

The EF lens will fit any of the Canon DSLR bodies. You'll have the "APS-C" crop factor on the digital body, which will efffectively multiply the focal length by 1.6. [Full frame Canon digital bodies excepted]

On a film body, your lens is 17-35, and on the 40D it'll perform like a 27-56, with the reduced sensor size (compared to film).

For my Canon bodies, a mix of film and APS-C, I tend only to use EF lenses (I have one EF-S which came with by 400D), and swap them around all the time.

Best of luck with the move to Digital, but do shoot some film now and again. There are quite a few film heads around these parts...

Thanks, good info. I guess there is a "dedicated" digital 17-35 now (that costs an arm and leg)?

I will continue with the film for sure. Looking to pick up another T90. The existing one's LCD panel has packed in, so second hand market for me.

I was thinking of going manual - Nikon FM2, Olympus OM-1n to get around this, but I've a lot of Canon gear (A-1 is still clunking away, love it!)
