Does anyone know what the cost is of dual layer burnable, lightscribe, Blu-ray discs are like? Do they even exist - are there different formats like there was for DVD.

Id there a really cool looking dual layer light scribe BD-R drive out there I can put on my shopping list or are they a waste of time?

    Thanks :)

No, there's no lightscribe BD-Rs on the market.

Personally i'd go with a Pioneer BDR-207DBK. Its not lightscribe but the burn quality looks exceptional.

    Which P8Z68? There's a few.
If it's one of the cheaper Asus ones, you might as well save the money and get the asrock.

    its the P8Z68 V LE.

Not a whole lot of difference there.
    http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68V_LE/#specifications
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=Z68%20Pro3&cat=Specifications

Only thing that grabs my attention is that the Asus has an additional x16 size PCI-E slot, but it only runs at x4 speed so it's not ideal for graphics card. Not really anything that's worth the extra tenner over the asrock.

Probably a daft question but PCIe x1 wont go in a x16 slot will it?

Yeah it will, probably a waste of a x16 slot though.

You can even put a GPU in a x1 slot (though usually it involves a bit of modification) but its bandwidth will be pretty limited.

It should actually, and even cooler you can put a PCIe x16 graphics card in a PCIe x1 slot . Just works at x1 speeds though.

Even though the cards are different lengths? Cool!

I'm building myself a HPTC at the moment! Just looking at TV cards and netflix subscriptions.

AMD have released Piledriver/Trinity APUs aimed at professional grade.
    http://vr-zone.com/articles/amd-launches-trinity-based-firepro-apu-but-where-s-trinity-for-desktops-/16932.html

Well that's an interesting move. Many professional graphics programs benefit from a GPU but not always enough to justify a graphics card. Would the GPU gains make up for the CPU loss though? This must be why we've not seen them rushing out to desktop release. There must be some manufacturing delay or high demand if they're staggering the releases.

Photoshops next update will be using quite a lot of openCL and some openGl hardware acceleration from AMD cards. apparently its incredibly efficient on an apu.

I'm struggling to find a good link for it besides some computex 2012 footage on YouTube.

    edit:

Adobe mercury engine will work with it, saving you having to buy a gtx570+

hi all, i'm having no display no my new build.

    These are my specs

PSU, is coolermaster rcaz 430 watt ( monotype is will kill me )
    motherboard asRock z68 pro
    Ram corsair 2Gb x 4
    CPU is i3 2120
GPU is Saphire 4890 although not on the motherboard now.

Just to add, theres no HDD light mouse lights up but keyboard doesnt.

Did you connect both connectors from the PSU to the motherboard? 8 pin + 24 pin?

Are the fans starting? Probably the best thing to do is to put in the graphics card to check to see if it's a problem with the onboard/onchip video.

I have a 24pin connector and a 4 pin but its meant to be compatible.

The fans are moving, If I get a ble LED I wont get the Red Led.

I have not connected the 4890 as I dont have the 6/8 pin connector.

Hmm... maybe it's expecting 8 pins worth of juice. It shouldn't need 8 pins for every CPU but they might have just designed it so that it won't run without it.

Which LEDs are this that we're talking about?

Is it just me or is this MSI 7850 (1GB version) very small?

    Love the fan :D

Is it a wise idea to stick my 4890 on it ?

When I still had my old motherboard on it the reset switch was red and the on/off Led was blue.

    And this were always on.

So if ones cpu temperature is like 99% does that mean the thermal paste was spread out wrong or not enough?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

    99% of what?

    99% of 100C eg 99C :D

Yep thats very high - fan not spinning on heatsink high.

Youtube thermal paste to see how to apply it.

so played around with the stock i5 cooler and found that it wasnt sitting right in the hole of the motherboard, that is fixed now but the temp is 59 C which a tad high compared to my cooler which was a corsair (that is excluding putting the side panel on)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

Quick update it seems it was the psu issue.

    I had to use a 24pins by/and 8pins or a 20pins by 4 pins.

Now i have to look for a case and PSU.

59C on an i5 ivybridge (3XXX) is about right.
