christ thats a terror that place.
Especially compared to the proper NRA stops or the midway complex at portlaoise which have massive amounts of parking.

And whats the story with the cars parked on the approach road?
Are they builders or punters that are parking there?
I presume its because theres no parking left in the main place, or is it just Ireland where anything goes and cars get abandoned, not parked?

They were a mixture of builders and punters. The excuse was that because there were so many builders on site, proper parking spaces were all used up. But regardless, there's not enough parking to cope with the demand of a busy summer's day.

I really must re-emphasise what I consider to be the danger of not segregating HGV and car traffic sufficiently.

In the UK the trucks are segregated from the cars once they merge of the Motorway. Seperate parking for trucks and cars. Trust Ireland to make a hash of it.

I had to laugh though when I seen your pics and the cars up on the footpath...

And to think the NRA Cashel MSA has been pulled for this

Did the NRA or RSA make any observations through the planing process???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 624 ✭✭✭Aidan1

A cynic would suggest that this merely shows the reason why the NRA chose the model they did for their MSA - the private sector simply wouldn't build big enough to future proof the services.

But I'm not a cynic, and will instead ask the critical question that will be burning in the mind of anyone who travels that road regularly. Whats the coffee like?

As they are at the NRA services.

First one of these is the Bandon Road Roundabout ;) The second is indeed the Glanmire bypass.

On the M8, southbound, about ten kilometers south of of Junction 11 Cahir South, something odd seems to be happening.

The road rises gradually and turns to the right, and there is a sound-barrier on the left as well as a crash barrier.

In the period the motorway has been open, this barrier has been crashed into on numerous occasions, as I speak it is busted again and a series of cones have been placed to close the overtaking lane (although no work seems to be happening on this section).

Here's the spooky thing: across the fields is a section of the old N8 which was the scene of a number of crashes (including a number of fatalities) with lorries and cars veering off the road, before the motorway was built.

    It's a strange coincidence.

Are there still a load of travellers parked along the side of the road at that point?

No they are a summer phenomenon.

It's a bit further south than that in fact.

Might be to do with the particular position of the sun in the sky, particularly in winter when its low to the ground....

On an aside how they are managing to get away with no fixing the water run-off issue north of Cashel is beyone me...travelled it a week ago and it was pouring rain but the water just sat there on the road, heard on AA roadwatch 1hr later that there was an "incident" near cashel on the M8...twas no surpruse...

There seems to be a lot of incidents on the section at Cahir between J10 and J11. This section, if I'm recall correctly, has an auxillary lane as well. Is there a design issue here?

No auxiliary lane and no design issues that I'm aware of. The 2km south of J10 northbound mightn't have the best sightlines, but I've never found it to be an issue at all.

The aux lane is between 8 and 9 at Cashel.

The two junctions are right on top of each other, so it makes more sense to have an auxiliary lane between them.

Isn't this also where the N74 intersects with the M8. Isn't there one lane which is marked N74?

The lane itself has no number markings but the signage does state N74 (on the southbound carriageway).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

...and I've looked very carefully, there is no potential for an M74 existing by a quirk of classification here :(

Why are there still cones blocking the overtaking lane both north and southbound at one point between Cashel and Mitchelstown for 'roadworks'? It's been like that for about 6 months, but I've never seen them doing any work on it.

Don't think so really, never noticed much standing water there. Some parts of that road are a joke for standing water, particularly in and around the Fermoy toll plaza and near Cashel.

I commented about that here already. We will probably be looking at the years anniversary soon.

A bad week for the M8. Two fatalities, one near Cahir and the other immediately north of the Watergrasshill toll plaza today.

Are these the first fatalities to occur on this motorway?

Cahir does not sound like a road accident to me:

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0423/man-dies-in-crash-on-m8-in-co-tipperary.html

Single vehicle, ended up in field, dead in truck = was dead before the truck left the road.

I wonder if the closure of the M8 between Cashen and Mitchelstown has anything to do with undetected problems at the construction stage. Wasn't there talk of the embankments settling too quickly?

If they're doing work that only needs a part time possession why on earth are they doing it during the day??

Drove south along the m8 from junction 3 and back Again today.
No cones to be seen at all. Parts of the road were resurfaced where the cones were previously on the southbound and northbound lanes.
In the bad weather that there was today, there were only two spots that were bad, one was a two meter wide puddle of water before junction 6 I think, and another was where the cones were before, and it was a 15 meter stretch of water, both were southbound. Didn't aquaplane, thankfully.

A wind turbine has been erected at junction 10 to power the lighting. It's not operational yet.

Is this is a one off thing or is there a strategy to do this at other junctions?

Unsure, Blunt. I think another turbine is being erected at junction 9.

Bad accident last night on the Watergrasshill Bypass southbound, about 1.5km north of J18.

A car left the carriageway at speed and smashed into the grass median, but was stopped by the wire barrier. A close one.

Has anyone noticed the new structure at junction 9? It's either a wind turbine or a piece of modern art

Junction 9 Cashel? I haven't seen two new structures, just one extremely tall metallic structure that looks like a standing cream beater.

Spotted one of those M50 style "Travel Time" signs near Urlingford the other day going NB. Hope they are going to put Travel Times on it and not "Garda Message - Slow Down" or something like that.

Was driving down from the matchs in Croker yesterday evening and saw two cars of Cork supporters pulled into that Garda Use layby which is gated off. There they were at side of a Motorway with cars whizzing by at 150km/h having tea and sandwiches! Highly dangerous and cringe worthy.

I also witnessed some gobsh1te reversing back on the hard shoulder as he had missed the M7-M8 turn off and having made the turn off myself I was like jeez, he is some eejit!

Just before the northbound exit at J9 is a mock-abandoned house which is an art "installation".

There's no cameras installed to track travel times on other motorways than the M50 and M1 (yet anyway).

The VMS rollout is independent of the travel time system.
