"Taoiseach Enda Kenny has made use of the Government's private jet more than any other cabinet member, accounting for 45% of the trips taken on the plane since taking office last March.

According to the Sunday Independent, Enda Kenny has used the Government jet 26 times - four of these trips were to the US and had a combined cost of €206,000.

The Taoiseach has used the €3,790-an-hour Gulfstream GIV jet to fly to Brussels mostly, but has also taken in destinations including Washington, London and Berlin.

However, use of the Government jet by the Cabinet has declined overall.."

    www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/taoiseach-made-almost-half-of-government-jet-trips-561073.html

They regard as news the fact that the taoiseach has used the jet more than any minister?? Are these journalists children?

Could they give us a comparison of the use/cost of the jet now compared to Bertie's/Cowen's last year in office?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Seems like he used the jet for official duties. What's the issue? That's what it's for surely...

Unless he was using the flights to pick up chicks or something

How else is he supposed to get to the countries?

I thought this was what people wanted, that the government jet would no longer be used by cabinet ministers to swan around in and would be reserved just for the serious business of An Taoiseach.

But by the basic laws of maths if the other ministers stop using it then the percentage of use by An Taoiseach is going to increase, even if his actual use has stayed the same or even decreased.

But surely no-one is actually complaining about this???

If Enda Kenny went to meeting in London with David Cameron and used a dingy to get over the Irish sea and cycled from Holyhead from London and back, the media will pick up on the price of the dingy and the bike.

No matter who is running the country, the media will always be anti government to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

He's the taoiseach, of course he'll use it more than any other cabinet member, he's the most 'important'
and it's for government business which it's intended, what's the issue?

Honestly, I would have a problem with Enda if he did as one Mary Harney did (and use official state aircraft for just the likes of going to officially open a friends pub) but he's been using the plane for flying to the United States etc on official business - fair enough!

I criticise the u-turn artist and coward a lot but official use of the state plane for what looks like genuine use, is not something I'd use in trying to have a go at him.

He's accountable for bigger things - which deserves bigger criticism I feel.

The government owns a jet. Its used for work.
The Taoiseach has used the €3,790-an-hour Gulfstream GIV jet to fly to Brussels mostly, but has also taken in destinations including Washington, London and Berlin.

Do you expect him to take a Ryanair flight?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭eth0

It wouldn't be so bad if he gave free lifts to anyone who wanted to go along

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,369 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

It's well worth the effort, because he's such an orator and persuasive individual, that there are going to be hundreds of thousands, if not millions of jobs created when all those foreign investors in awe of his arse-licking ability set up thousands of businesses the length and breadth of the country. There will be so many jobs, we'll all have at least 20 each.

Well this is a government who can't provide adequate services to the nation, due to cut backs and lack of finances but he has time to take the jet around. What's stopping him from booking an aerlingus flight to take him to the states or to take him over to his new adopted country that is Germany.

I've seen plenty of politicians, past and present on aerlingus flights so why is he any different.

    It's €3790 per hour!

In fairness while this is a non-story, and of course the Government jet should be used for times when a regular flight is unavailable or too slow, I don't think the concept of government ministers or the Taoiseach flying Ryanair should be out of the question, no.

If it's good enough for the Queen of Spain, it should be good enough for all of our Queens in cabinet.

I'm not saying that it should never be used. But to take it for every single trip over seas is rediculous.

In that article it states that he took it to Washington. Flight time from Dublin to Washington is approx 7 hours. A return flight would have caused the tax payer €55,580!

All so enda could give the bowl of shamrock to obama.

Have you checked that Enda alone was on that flight? If there were a number of people on it, it changes the maths somewhat.

Trying to secure foreign interest in Ireland. You know that bit about getting international companies in here, imports/exports, trade, trying to creating employment.

Oh ya, lets go with the negative stuff, its more fun.

Well a standard flight return to the states would be roughly €600-700. So say he had a posy of 10 with him, it's still rings in at €7000.

So, it would change the maths somewhat. It would have saved the tax payer €48,580
