Hello. I rarely post in here so I guess I'm hoping ya'll will respect my poll and question here. So my question is, as an atheist/agnostic who browses this forum, what are your interests? you can also vote for interests that happen to be your full time job if you like. I am interested in what it is atheists/agnostics are interested in, even though religious people may have the same interests.

So let me get the poll going before you reply. Of course you can actually respond with your interest if you want beforehand and I cannot guarantee I will have covered everything.... so feel free to click ''other''.

The lack of sport in the poll is a bit annoying :pac:

Could honestly tick nearly everything though - the day job is as a software developer, but I have very broad interests and will read just about anything that grabs my attention.

Haha thanks Rainbow. This is probably due to my great lack of belief in sports haha. but how on earth did I miss SOFTWARE? tutut shame on me. I have a great interest in this too. Well the ''other'' option is there and there is no going back now haha:(:pac:

    LOL

THE HISTORY CHANNEL ( and things similar to it )
I voted science as tis my job :P (I'm a researcher) but yeah like kirby I could tick quite a few of those. Reading would be high up there too, I love old mythology (anything Norse I just love). Pc games and general arsing around on the computer take up a large portion too. Yeah I guess I'm a bit of a stereotypical nerd when it comes to my hobbies :p

I clicked on music/musician as I am a composer/music lecturer/teacher. I would have also clicked on sport if that was an option as I am also an avid runner and run for a club.

That is one completely pointless poll.

    Needs more Atari Jaguar.

Also, anyone with only one interest has a serious problem.

What is so pointless about the poll? I just have an ''interest'' in what atheists/agnostics are ''interested'' in. Just trying to find some common ground.

Sarky the poll was primarily designed for people who have a serious interest in ONE subject as opposed to several. Kinda like saying: ''so your interested in science and football, but, what is your preference though?''

We're allowed to have one interest and that's supposed to tell you what about atheists/agnostics? :D

That if you all vote for Enda Kenny its no wonder you're atheists :pac:

Seriously though, tis just an interest I have. I'm not trying to ''suss'' you out or anything.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL ( and things similar to it )
I'm interested in fornicating with Christians out of wedlock, just so I can see the disgust on their parent's face. It rocks my world.

Why is biology separate to science, but not chemistry or physics?

    Is biology not science?

    Science
If it helps, I have a great interest in history and archaeology. I'm currently studying to try for a career in museum work.

You do realise atheists are people, right?

We already have plenty of common ground, just religion isn't one of them.

All of the above apart from medicine and performing arts. Some ballet music does rock though, Le Sacre du Printemps style moreso than Swan Lake.

I see some people who have posted in this thread holding back from voting in the poll. What's wrong? is this poll intimidating to you? if so....why?

Simples, it's not multiple choice, that's a pretty big problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

My life interest is technology and the computer sciences, as well the use of information in modern businesses and society in general, primarily through the use of technology. So in other word, mainly anything IS.

But I've already noted that it's what interest you prefer most than anything else.

Again, is there a reason you don't consider biology to be science?

I've answered that the poll is dreadful for options but tbh, your options seem suspicious to me.

Actually I was trying to be polite and keep the numbers down on "this poll is dreadful"...but you've pushed me into a corner now. :p

Look, I'm not the brightest of stars and I think my idiotic poll is evidence of that, so I'm sorry that I did not include music and performing arts under the same category or biology and science likewise. At this time of night and with such short a time before beddies I didn't quite have the time to be the mastermind and create a perfect poll so the other is there for ya if ya wanna pick it.

*facepalm* ok so what is suspicious about this poll? Am I suddenly ( as a result of this poll ) going to go and print it out into the Irish times and then proclaim I've got the answer as to why people are atheist? Come on!!!! how could an atheist who has an interest in science ( when a Christian could have the same interest ) be said that that is the cause of his atheism?

Are you for real? ( that is if that is the suspicions you have ).

Atheists and Agnostics, much like Christians, Jews, Muslims and everyone else has a variety of interests and hobbies.

I wouldn't say the poll is suspicious, but it's quite limited really. It basically covers the sciences and arts.

If multiple options could be given, I'd say you'd get a much broader response.

Well . . . the ''other'' is there I guess and people can come in and state their interests here on thread if they want.

I am for real. It seemed suspicious to me because the only reason I could think of for such bizarre and specific options was that you were trying to pigeonhole atheists/agnostics into what you perceive them to be like.

However, if you say it was merely your own laziness/apathy/carelessness then that's fine, I believe you. I just assumed that a christian starting a thread about atheists/agnostics on the atheism/agnosticism forum would be a little more careful in their choice of words if their stated aim is to learn more.

I suppose I'm an agnostic of sorts, so:
music, languages, maths, physics, writing, reading (yes, "intellectual stuff" included), politics... I could probably go on...??

But which of these retains your heightened interest? Like which one do you prefer?

I had to go with other. Poll needs to allow for multiple choices! I could've picked out one, but it would've been pretty arbitrary.

Not intimidating, but nowhere near inclusive enough. Atheists aren't interested in a limited range of stuff, but in everything that a theist could be interested in, plus a few other things. Asking what an atheist is interested in is akin to asking 'what is a human interested in?'. I like several things on the poll, but they wouldn't be like hobbies.

    I like, in no particular order;
Music, Classic rock, through classical, reggae, and novelty to prog rock (appreciation rather than doing, though I have been told I have a good voice)
    Art, appreciation rather than doing
    Reading
    Crochet
    Walking
    Dogs
    Botany/horticulture/gardening
    Zoology
    The sciences
    Cycling
    Paelientology (sp)
    Anthropology
And probably a hundred other things I can't think of now.
