Lose the will to live when doing annual map update on Garmin Nuvi 310

About 5 years ago, I bought a Garmin NUVI 310 Deluxe (UK & Irl). 2 years later, I bought a lifetime subscrption for City Navigator Europe maps.

Before we go on hols every year, I update the maps. The annual map update fills me with dread and fear because it is such an unbelievably convoluted process. Every year, I search vainly online to see if Garmin have simplified the process, but once again, it looks like they haven't.

The unit only has a 512mb internal memory, so I also use a 4Gb SD card (the max size the unit can support). Is there anyway I can just insert the SD into my Mac & update it directly? Garmin recommend the maps should be updated via the GPS unit, but since it's only USB 1, it takes forever to update. As well as that, it is a very painful process to do.

Since I spent a fortune originally on the unit & lifetime subscription, I hate to just bin it & buy a new GPS, but I don't think I can face another map update.

Has anybody figured out an easier way to update these units?

If I just go out and buy a new GPS unit, will the update process be as complicated - or has update technology improved now so that the units auto update without connecting to a PC/Mac?

I remember putting open source maps of NZ directly onto an SD card which my parents Nuvi 250 just read. Once you have the image file you should be grand.
You can select which maps to use in the settings menu under map iirc.

Are you saying that the mac is usb1 or your satnav?

Updating my nuvi takes me about 3 hours on a poor broadband connection. It's mostly an 'unattended' operation so it's not too bad now.

If you buy a new device, the new update process will not be much quicker if your computer has major limitations

I finished updating the maps yesterday, so all sorted now. It just always amazes me how complicated the process it is.

Yip - that's the way I usually set it up. UK/Irl on unit, rest of Europe on SD

The Satnav is USB1 (as far as I know, although I'm open to correction). I've 30Mb Broadband, so downloading the maps isn't the prob. The slow part is getting them from the Mac onto the unit. I had to run the update 4 times yesterday because it kept freezing up at the very end.

Tom Tom for me next time.
