Yeah I've tickets booked already. Only €3 each!

I hope that it does really well. would be great for any big sequels to have the fist shown the week of it.

I'm sure there's some reason I don't know of that they can't do this, but why don't they show classic films every weekend for €3? JAWS? TERMINATOR 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭MitchKoobski

I think its something along the lines of the reels being in circulation (or at least it used to be), but theres definitely contracts involved as far as what films play when and how many times.

If its some random weekend, not everyone will go to the showing of the film. However, if it is being re-shown alongside a sequel or a reboot or re-release on Bluray etc, then theres quite a bit of money to be made from it and the production companies would be on board.

I'd imagine classic films might be tough given the change in technology or is it as easy as sticking in a DVD?

I'm sure they'd do OK on a night doing that. There is allot of people who haven't seen some of the best films ever made in the cinema.

    Terminator 2(like was mentioned)
    Alien/Aliens
Die hard trilogy (there were only 3 OK!!!!)

Could even do a night of classics that allot of people hevent seen at all:

    12 angry men
    Seven Samurai
    City of God

    Possibilities are endless really.

I am amazed no one showed Alien or Aliens when Prometheus was about to come out.

I'd say we'll see Die Hard being shown again at least in some places with the new one coming out.

The only real money-reason to re-show the films these days is 3D re-releases and when the films are being released on BluRay

60% of the profit from cinema's comes from the shop, distributors can take as much as 95 % of the ticket sales on new releases,

Myself and the hubby and two children went to cinema today, Ice Age 4 in 3D, tickets and food cost €68, Im still in shock and probably won't recover until Ice Age 7!!!! Now I know cinema food is a bit of a rip off and in fairness I bought 2 medium popcorn for the kids without actually realising the price but Christ, the two of then cost nearly €12.00!! On top of that then their drinks machine was broken so we had to get bottled drinks from the fridge, they were about €3.00 each for a small bottle ofDr.Peeper We wud have popped over to Tesco to buy stuff only my handbag wasn't bloody big enough to sneak the stuff in!!

How can they justify those prices?

I had loads of respect for you till I read this.....

I think everyone who posted on this thread should all go to see Batman together.

    Except the calorie counter!

We actually had a cinema night running through the forum for a while. It was always a good night. Few lads moved away so we kinda knocked it but could be worth revisiting at some point.

It's actually mad but you can almost always tell they are a boardsie before you meet them

I can see this becoming another excuse for a boards beers night. :D

Buy your popcorn in xtravision!!!! Some job.

Tastes so much better from xtravision and you actually get a cardboard box not a crappy paper bag like the cinema gives, all cost cutting factors:rolleyes:

Its so expensive cause they have zero competition in the city.

It's easy to assume that's the case because there isn't any competition. It's definitley not the case. Now Odeon, the prices are the exact same regardless of which Odeon cinema you go to in Ireland.

Since all the screens are now digital it is easier to get a hold of the films, BUT... will the return be greater than the cost, its easier to do this all on scale i.e. all the Odeon cinemas doing it say one week, they can get 8 prints at a cheaper cost than 1 cinema. The aim is still on selling the food though.

Anyone know where the best screen\sound is in the cinema, have not been in years but going to see the new Batman movie. Seems to be on in screens 1-4 at various times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭MitchKoobski

Screen 1 or 2 are the two best IMO.

Theres not a huge difference in sound, but you get a better view of the screen when theres more seats. I remember seeing Tintin in the smallest screen and I had to actually sit in the premier seats just to be able to see the screen.

Lucky the OP saw it in Waterford and not Cardiff.

Adult price cardiff 3d incl glasses = almost €16
    Family price = €47

addin 2 drinks and 2 med popcorn and you can add about €24 to that for a total of over €70!!!

I'm so glad this thread happened, otherwise I wouldn't have heard about the showings of the 1st 2 batman's...!

Pricing is better now that they've got the Odeon clubcard thingy and 15% off for online booking, and just bought a popcorn maker in Lidl... Mrs Stinson will have to bring a bigger handbag from now on... ;)

I'm glad my whinge resulted in something positive :D. Don't mind a bigger handbag, next time I'm bringing a suitcase (prefereably one that fits the children in it!) :D

Those percentages vary from cinema chain to cinema chain hence different ticket prices.
