Hello I am considering applying to TCD, for 2013 entry, but I currently do not have a modern language subject choice. I was exempt from doing Irish as I only moved to Ireland in 2010/2011 after living in the UK for 16 years, so I was exempt from doing Irish. Would I qualify for a waiver?

You will need a second language - French, German, Spanish and Italian being the most common for students form Ireland.

Being exempt from Irish means they wont expect Irish from you, but if you simply didn't do a modern language at all, such as French, Italian, German, Spanish etc. then you'd need to have a reason such as a learning or hearing disability to waive your lack of one of those.

That said, it's always worth asking them.

    Matriculation requirements:
To be considered for admission to the University you must:

*Present six subjects, three of which must be at grade C or above on higher Leaving Certificate papers or at least grade C in the University Matriculation examination

The six subjects above must include:

    *A pass in English
*A pass in mathematics and a pass in a language other than English

    OR

*a pass in Latin and a pass in a subject other than a language

Interesting. Basically I never did a language at GCSE level, so I have no foundation to do a 2nd language at LC. I am attempting to learn French now, so I should be able to a decent B or A at honour level this time next year. I just wanted the security of a waiver in case of the worst :)

You MUST have two languages to get in (unless you have Latin)

Note the exemption is granted from the leaving cert requirement.

Trinity/University of Dublin is unique in that it has NEVER required a pass in Irish (except where the course requires), English + some other language. So the exemption you have is of no importance unless you want to go to UCD for instance where Irish is a mandatory requirement (i.e. if taken at leaving cert level you must pass Irish)

You only need an ordinary D3 in the second language. If you don't need it for points, and you're relatively smart, you shoud be able to get that in 2 years with minimal work... And since you have no foundation in any 2nd language, it would be more useful to start something like spanish, mandarin or even german....

I have a few friends who are fluent in French so that is a great help to me, for French, plus I love France :D I only have 6th year left, so only a few months.

That is a great positive attitude to have. Best of luck with the Leaving Certificate.
