Downing can't be as poor as he was last season,
New manager, New role, New system, One he is made for>?
    Works hard, tracks back

I think we might see great improvement,

Carroll turned corner at end of last season,
Running down ball, chasing everything, Scoring

Crowding chanting his name, He was on fire
Need to keep him, On bench,,, so be it,
As i have no doubt he can come on and change a 0-0 into a victory,

Carroll on fire? Sometimes i read peoples comments on Andy and i wonder if we were watching the same player in action.

Towards the end of the season, with the pressure off completely in the League, yes he was much improved. Thats not saying much to be honest. He was ok, maybe good at best. He changed the game for the fa cup final yes, he was excellent in that game....however overall his end of season form has been good and season overall has been poor and extremely dissapointing.

His form improved dramatically after the away defeat to Newcastle.

I think the reception he got that day opened his eyes to the fact that he was no longer welcome on Tyneside. He tried harder than anyone else in a lot of games after that and should have started the cup final. That was a huge mistake by Kenny. He also showed in the Euros that he was perfectly capable of holding up the ball, and when you put in a half decent cross he'll get on the end of it and score.

It all depends on whether Andy can adapt to Rodgers style of play. I hope he stays.

I agree with what you say, but on fire or fantastic he wasn't....some people may like to rewrite history when it comes to some players. Andy done well towards the end of the season....thats about it

    Unplayable.

Under Hodgson, with Carra at the back and Gerrard and Adam lobbing balls into him Andy C would be an animal....... ;)

Ah, i dunno, Kenny picked the team that slapped Norwich 2 games before that, could hardly blame him for that. Of course its easy in hindsight to pick teams.

Just to add, i believe Downing gets a raw deal off fans, good season? no, not really, create plenty of chances for his team?, yes, himself and Suarez close to each other in the stats and miles ahead of others. If Carroll had shown up for 8 months of the season he would have had a bag full of assists, which is what he was bought for. Kenny and Downing were not responsible for his (Downing's) price.

I suppose the point is, it wouldnt surprise me if Downing had a similar season but their was someone in the box who was a poacher that reflects accurately what he provided in terms of crosses. Lets not forget, Downing has averaged 3-4 goals a season his entire career, he was never gonna offer that and was never bought for that.

So Borini in, Maxi and Kuyt out. Assuming everyone else stays put what other positions do you all think we should be prioritising for the start of the season?

I'd like to see another wide player arrive. And another central midfielder.

a wide player is a priority for me followed by back up for lucas

Yeah I agree with the wide player (anyone interested in Adam Johnson?) but I also think we need someone good enough to play regularly with Lucas due to others being injured or not good enough

    Starting winger
Backup to Lucas (who preferably can also play with him)
Backup wing-forward (in the Bellamy mould)

A couple of journos have mentioned Walcott with us. What do you lads think? I like him tbh and he could fit into the system that Rodgers prefers to play.
He is in his last year with Arsenal(I think), hasn't been offered a new contract and would come to us (again I think) as he is a Liverpool fan.
    Thoughts?

If Borini is only on £30k a week, we must have trimmed at least £100k off the wage budget already.

well maxi was reportedly on 90k a week, kuyt on 80k and aurelio on 40k thats nearly 11 million in saved wages.

we have 4 players still on massive contracts, gerrard (who is worth every penny), carragher (100k) one year left and cole and aquiliani (2 years each)on apparently 180k between them (another 9 million p.a)

Too many players who are not in the first 11 on massive wages - get rid of them and get it borini type players who want to challenge for the first team rather than collect their cheques

Grated Johnson is on big money but at least he is a regular starter compared to some others on big wages and there is some value to him.

johnson will probably start most games this season. I was highlighting that 5/6 of our highest earners at the end of last season were not in the first 11!

We have 3 more mid to high earners who may or may not make the match day squad under rodgers - carroll (60k) downing (60k) and adam (45/50k) they could be worth 25-30 mill in transfers and another 9mill in wages.

downing may stay but carroll looks sure to go and I dont see where adam fits in especially if we go for allen.

Rodgers certainly has a job to do!

But no doubt the new TV deal will see wages rise again. And the majority of the players follow the money.

Gerrard hasn't been worth the 100k for the past 3 seasons now due to mostly injuries but his for as well at times hasn't been the best. A big season from him is needed.

I would expect from marketing, kit sales etc etc he is probably worth 2/3 times that to the club!

We have to move away from the model of signing players towards the end of their careers on crazy wages and hanging on to players who are no longer worth their salaries. Im just remembering jovanoic and vornonin - they probably cost as much as borini (transfer + wages) in signing on fees, salaries etc...

I dont think the club are adverse to paying top wages (i expect suarez, agger and skertl will sign new improved deals) for players going into the first team.

Not a massive fan of Walcott, but he is only 23 and has become much more productive over the last two seasons. Not a bad shout if he could be got for 7 or 8 million, given he is on the last year of his contract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭emrys

walcott according to wiki 11 goals 13 assists last season. not too bad - pretty quick too - could do well in a front 3 if we play 4-3-3 - liverpool fan apparently
anything under 10 million is decent value.

Walcott joining us could only be rivaled with Robinho joining us would make a lot of my non-LFC mates happy considering the hate I give them all too regularly over the years!

    13 min Lucas compilation

Really cannot wait to see him step out on a pitch for us again.

What's wrong with Robinho(apart from his aversion to scoring from two yards) ?

I really hope we are going to see significantly more transfer activity. We spent big last year, but we spend badly, so most of those positions still need to be improved. I really hope there's a couple of players in the £20m bracket on the way...
