Train is €14.99 single, €29.98 return - book online at least 3 days in advance (plus €2 transaction fee, there's also a €1 Credit Card fee which can be avoided by using Laser).

Bus Eireann is €18.52 single, €26.60 return within the month. However, there's no direct service - route 21 requires a change at Athlone. Timetable is here: http://www.buseireann.ie/pdf/1301050805-21.pdf

I'm not aware of a private company on that route.
