For anyone following it, Jan Vertonghen was officially announced as a Spurs player today following his medical. Haven't heard how long his contract is, and we probably won't hear how much he's on, wages are normally kept quiet at Spurs.

Here's Jan and Glyfi with AVB:

    He is worth that, easily.

He's head and shoulders above every other CB in the world, only Kompany comes close.

I disagree. I don't think Silva is worth paying €20 million more than the current world record fee for a defender. Don't get me wrong, he's a fabulous defender, but not worth that IMO. The only club in the world who would pay it is PSG. Especially, and I say this as big Serie A fan, as he hasn't played in the few stronger leagues. He'll coast it in Ligue 1 of course though.
Maybe not quite the €65 mark, but he'd easily reach €50 million on his own. A world class centre back offers as much as a world class forward does.

In football terms yes, transfer history no. The world record transfer for an attacking player is a little short of double than what was paid for a defender.

Not sure if it's mentioned on here or not already, but Piennar is as good as an Everton player. Not included in the Spurs squad photo either.

I'd agree. I would nearly say a fantastic keeper is worth more than a fantastic CB. Buffon (in his prime) or Casillas would be worth more points over a season. A CB can be exposed by their fellow CB, or a porous midfield. It's impossible to be as big, as mobile and as quick as the variety of strikers they face. So occasionaly, they will be made look less than super-human, by the nature of the position...

Garry O'Connor (ex-Hibs) is in Russia to sign with Tom Tomsk, according to sports.ru. They were relegated from the Premier Division last season.

Odd move. Surely there was a club in Scotland wanting to sign him? I'd rather play there than the second tier of Russian football. He's not going for money either since Tom doesn't have any.

He's a cokehead that struggles badly for fitness. Only a club in the arsehole of Russia would touch him at this stage

Has he ever tested positive for illegal drugs? If not, I'd retract that statement.

    I wont be retracting anything!

    http://local.stv.tv/edinburgh/103569-out-of-breath-footballer-gary-oconnor-caught-by-police-after-300m-dash/
The police officer told the trial: "There were four persons in the vehicle. A male was putting a piece of paper towards his nose." The officer then opened the door to the Land Rover, which was parked in Hope Street Lane.

He said: "At that time I believed the male was snorting cocaine or something along those lines." The man, whom he identified as O'Connor, appeared "nervous and distracted," he said. Constable Morrow said he saw a bag containing white powder and a rolled up £20 note in the middle of the back seat of the car.

After speaking to another man in the car, he then chased O'Connor a distance of around 300 meters towards Rose Street. The Hibs player was stopped by another police officer. "He was very nervous looking, he was out of breath, he appeared to be shaking."

Another officer, Constable Katherine Eager, had spoken to O'Connor while he was sitting in the Land Rover. She said O'Connor initially tried to give a false name, but fled after spelling it wrong.

He was found guilty of drug possession & obstructing police on the day his Hibs contract expired.

He has had a few run ins with the police with regards to being brought in on suspected cocaine possession. Don't think he has ever been charged formally though, although that may or may not change with the current court case.

    Guilty until proven innocent, eh?

    WTF is this, China?

Rules like the Cycling forum need to be brought in here, no calling someone a cheat/criminal until they are convicted.

He served a 2 month ban from playing professional football in England for drug use, specifically cocaine use.

He was found guilty of cocaine possession last month. Police witnessed him snorting it aswell.

He has sporting and criminal convictions for cocaine possession and use. He's a cokehead.

Save your rant for when it actually applies

Someone asked why Scottish clubs avoided him, I gave the reasons why.
