I took 9 on 18, so my +5 on a hole beats your +4 :p Was 6 over before that, so cant really compare, although missing out on the buffer is starting to hurt me just as much as missing out on a prize :(

Your 9 will revert to a 6 thogh for h/cap so will that save you?

Pushed drive into trees, hacked out, blocked 3 wood OB, shot up, poor chip (head gasket went!) then 3 stabbed.

It's a cracking hole 17, but tough if you miss right. I went left into the trees, hacked it up the 4th fairway and escaped with a par. Anytime I've missed right it's usually bogey or worse. Still, thought it was a good event, a lot of people playing not easy to get that many out in strokes. We got the best of the weather as well, teed off at 2 30 and managed to escape getting wet!

    Received this email today:

Malahide Golf Club are hosting a Mens' Junior Scratch Cup and a Mens Intermediate Scratch Cup on Sunday July 8th.
I am asking all Members to help us promote this event to their friends and family. Over the next few years we are hoping to turn this into a major event on the scratch cup calendar, but we can't achieve this without the help of YOU, our members.
With 2 weeks to go there are over 100 golfers paid up for our Scratch Cup day which is already an increase on last years total entry.
This year we are charging less to play and giving out more in prizes. Entry is €20 for guests and €10 for members. We will give out a minimum of €1200 in prizes on the day, with the winner of each event getting a massive €250 in vouchers. In addition to Gross prizes we will also have 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Nett prizes.
The Junior Scratch Cup (Bob McAdoo Cup) is for Golfers in the 4-9 handicap range. The Intermediate Scratch Cup is for golfers in the 10+ range with a maximum allowance of 18.
Please help us by mailing this reminder onto any of your contacts that are interested in golf.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Frederick Moran
    Captain

Was supposed to be on the Championship course but I was up there last night and a couple of the bunkers on the new holes were pretty badly damaged by the ridiculous rain on Thursday/Friday so that might be why it was moved.

Birr Intermediate SC was on today. I 'played' in it. Details are in 'last round' thread. It's not pretty, but then neither is the course. :p

JSC in Carlow Sun 1st Jul for €30. GUI site lists it as 18 holes but rang the club to enter to find it's 36 holes so good value. Never played Carlow or in deed a 36 hole competition before so looking forward to it, it'll be quite the initiation.

Played this today and it was exceptional value as there was also a lunch included which I wasn't expecting. A serious test of golf off the blues with the semi quite long and clingy and the rough (which was near knee high) savage tough meaning you were lucky to find your ball even if you couldn't do much with it. But wow were the greens fast and true, lightening quick really requiring your full attention or it would be yet another 3 putt. Course in great condition and you'd never think it was after getting a month of solid heavy rain.

Not sure of the scoring but heard there was a 75 and 76 in after the first round which was some going. Weather got a bit blustery mixed with mist and heavier rain for the second round which made scoring tougher and quite a few people and groups seemed to call it pack it in after 9 so can't imagine scores got any better overall.

36 holes is tough going requiring alot of perseverance and concentration especially in poor weather. Don't know how the big amateur events play these consecutively as they sure are energy sapping.

Course is in some nick man isnt it? The rough is like that the past month or so now, makes it so much tougher

Fancied another craic at inter scratch this Sunday, found 2 options, both with a few spaces left, both 10-18 hcap range, both 20 euro , both courses I've played a few times and like, can't decide which one to play !

Rathcore or Killeen , thoughts ?

    *NEW TO GOLF QUESTION ALERT*

What is the difference between junior, intermediate and senior? Is it just different ranges of handicap?

All to do with handicaps link. A senior scratch will usually involve players off 4 or lower. Junior scratch will be open to players between 5-9 handicap, although plenty are open to 4s as well. Intermediate and Minor scratches also popular, not sure what exact handicap requirements are for those but they'd rarely be played over 36 holes as very high handicappers might struggle over so many holes of strokeplay. Seniors and juniors find em hard enough, believe me!

AFAIK intermediate is 10 to 18 and minor is 18+

I also think that anyone over an 18 handicap can enter an intermediate scratch if there is room but must play off 18.

Well 18 if there is a net prize but off scratch like everyone else for gross prizes which is what scratch cups are all about

They're a great competition and usually offer great value. It's the purest form of competition, stroke play from the back sticks and usually with tough pin positions in the mix also. Something like playing a Captain's Prize format in away clubs.
You get to play the away courses and often for a reduced fee and more often than not good prizes on offer also if you happen to score well. A great day out really, now if only the weather could be as good.

Same as a 10 playing in the junior or a 5 playing the senior, they can play but gotta play off the lower hcap
