I never use a card because I never have any cash in my account! Getting paid cash in hand will do that to ya.

Depends on how busy a place is and I'd get cash back the one time I'd do it not to constantly slow service down for everyone else in a busy bar.If at all possible I'd walk to nearest ATM though or borrow from a mate if I knew we would be passing an ATM later.

Only found out last weekend that there is no public ATMs (or any as far as I know) on one side of my home town where the main bars are!? Same here in dublin we'd be lost without spars etc having them in storeas the banks tend to stick them all beside each other.

I was in a club in Madrid once and they didn't cash or card at the bars. You had to buy drink tokens at a kiosk and then you'd exchange them for drinks. One token = one drink so if you were drinking soft drinks or even beer then you were losing out when you saw the quadruple measures of spirits they were serving.

It was a decent system though. No mucking around with change or with card machines so they were able to serve two or three people per minute.

Out on the high stool tonite good craic and the rest, went up to the bar to order some light refreshments, fairly big que and at the top was someone paying with a card which entails the barmaid to stop hand it to him put it in wait, and wait some more while its authorized, while me and the rest of the que waited and waited, as there were only two barstaff it. I'd completely understand if it was a big round and was left a bit shy, it was two pints, it really irks me!

So do ya pay for gargle with the card??
Don't go to France op,you will be crying at the bar watching every beret wearing baget munching frenchie pay by card.

I live in New Zealand and here EVERYBODY uses cards to pay for pints at the bar. It's really quick and easy...our machines at he are just a bit slow and crappy. It works great here...nobody carries cash ever.

Sounds horrible, it would mean that if there were any more computer glitches like the current Ulster Bank fiasco we'd be back to the barter system.

Wave your wallet in front of the scanner, and anything €15 or less gets debited immediately, without need for pin code etc. Should speed things right up when this gets rolled out.

You can only use them three times before it has to go for an authorisation. The Card companies are really trying to push this technology to move people away from cash. AIB are issuing them now as well, I think.

So it'd be a much better system, once you're willing to waive €45 every time you go out?

I generally only bring enough cash to cover me for the night when i go out. Usually leave the card at home so i don't lose it or end up buying more than i intended.

I would just end up borrowing money of someone. I was in a club 2 weekends ago that didnt take card and I ran out of cash with about an hour left so ended up borrowing 20 euro of one friend, spent that and then 20 euro of another friend and spent that too.

I've done that a few times this year alone when running out of money and the place not taking card or being too lazy to go to the machine.

I just set up a tab in my local and pay at the end before I leave. Often with a card but not exclusively.
