Paying by card in a pub

Out on the high stool tonite good craic and the rest, went up to the bar to order some light refreshments, fairly big que and at the top was someone paying with a card which entails the barmaid to stop hand it to him put it in wait, and wait some more while its authorized, while me and the rest of the que waited and waited, as there were only two barstaff it. I'd completely understand if it was a big round and was left a bit shy, it was two pints, it really irks me!

So do ya pay for gargle with the card??

Pretty much the only time I'd pay by card was if I had no cash on me or if the nearest atm was miles away. I prefer to buy drink using cash so I can keep better track of it. I see a lot of people buying whole rounds on the card while locked and then kickin themselves the next morning when they've no money left in the account.

I often use a card when I order my first pint and get cashback. Then I gradually hand the money back through the course of the night

If the place is quiet, then i'll use a card.

But if its busy then it's cash.

This new Visa debit card from bank of ireland makes it interesting.

Wave your wallet in front of the scanner, and anything €15 or less gets debited immediately, without need for pin code etc. Should speed things right up when this gets rolled out.

Personally, I usually just bring cash to a pub, limits the amount I may end up spending. Doesn't really bother me if someone is paying by card though. Yeah, it might take a little longer for the transaction to be complete, but so what, a couple of minutes of a night spent in a queue, I'll get over it.

The odd time where I haven't had cash going in to a pub, I'd get cash back after my first order. I consider it handier for both myself and staff

Paying by card can be very fast if they have a modern payment processor that uses 3g. Some of the older machines are very slow to connect tho, they might even still use 56k modem to dialup etc.

I live in New Zealand and here EVERYBODY uses cards to pay for pints at the bar. It's really quick and easy...our machines at he are just a bit slow and crappy. It works great here...nobody carries cash ever.

Typically ill just use cash in a pub for various reasons. This is not just pubs but the processing speed of a card payment varies so widely amongst shops etc... To speedy to the ridiculously slow.

I do wish we'd speed up the process of moving towards a more general cashless society. It would be great if technology like NFC etc could be tightened up and developed and integrated more into every day life. So much more convenient

I always pay by card in my local as I can then get cash back and use that throughout the night.

Its in their best interests to let me use it, because if not I have go elsewhere to an atm and I might go to a different pub in that area.

Plus, what sort of barman can't serve while the machine loads, you enter your pin and its processes? He doesn't have to wait and watch you.

i have a feeling alot of them cards will go missing

coming from a country town only one or two bars have card facilities..Were lucky that theres a fair few ATMs about if funds are running low..Although i have been caught on nights out in Dublin and was just handier pay by card and at my sisters wedding in a posh enough place last year it was just handier to pay by card.I wonder how long it will take us to go down the american route of sticking the card behind the counter and settling the tab before leaving

I pay by cash in a pub, but paying for two pints sounds like someone has been there all afternoon and has no more cash left.

Are they not planning to do some NFC roll out at some stage?

Would prefer to go to an ATM before hand. So pay by card very rarely.

You can only use them three times before it has to go for an authorisation. The Card companies are really trying to push this technology to move people away from cash. AIB are issuing them now as well, I think.

Depends on the pub. I'll pay by cash if I have it.

If they're doing table service then I tell the girl to bring the card machine with the pints and then get cashback. If it's a busy pub in the city centre where you have to go to the bar I'll usually go to an ATM first.

I would usually have cash. I had none one time and asked if I could get cash back with the card, I am not supposed to be able with my card. They refused me because of this and I just said "ok, but I am going to be using this all night, so it would save you and me time", they had a chat with some other senior looking guy and I got €60 back.

I pay for everything by card, if I had cash I'd spend more.
You can blame the gobberment for taxing the ****e out of me for that one.

everything goes on the card, pack of tayto - laser comes out.

what's the problem here ?

Most shops have the new verifone card reader which authorises your card payment in just a few seconds v's the old ****e one's which can take 1 - 2 mins

I use cash the majority of the time, its much easier and quicker in a busy bar, the card often comes out at the end of the nightclub when the cash runs out for funding jager bombs

I lived in London for a while though and there everyone pays by card. Most pubs start a tab for you though so its handy, they put your card behind the bar and you pay for all your drinks when your leaving.

Other than the pub though I use card for almost everything its much better than carrying cash imo.

We live out in the sticks and the nearest ATM is about 25 miles away! If I'm caught short of cash and fancy a pint or six, I'll usually run a tab and pay it off on the card at the end of the night.
We get a lot of foreign tourists through the village and they seem to want to pay on their cards for each and every round. Off topic, they also seem to be in the habit of ordering and paying for each persons drink separately. Combine this with paying by card and it's usually enough to drive me to the next pub!

More drinks: €102 (F*ck, F*ck, F*ck)
Zaytoons: €65 (Jesus...hope I wasn't there on my own)

Bring a portable scanner with a large antenna , walk through a pub / crowded Luas , and skim away.

Ain't that the truth. The number of times I've woken up next morning thinking I've 'only' spent the hundred that was in my pocket and then later on stumbled across a couple of card receipts for large rounds of jager bombs.

Checking my account online is one of the first things I do the morning after to see if/what damage was done with the card that I don't remember. Its can be a painful experience but if you spent nothing it cheers you up so can go either way.

Where I'd normally go they do table service, ans run tabs on the tables. Considering all the barstaff know me its easier for me just to get the drinks, put em on the table ans settle it at the end of the night using either cash it card.
