~2k to spend on gaming rig

Hello everyone!

I have about 2k to spend on a gaming rig,
so I was wondering if any of you could build me
a stupidly powerful computer :P

1. What is your budget? ~2000 euro

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming, but want it powerful enough to do anything

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need? Thinking 27" Yamakasi.....

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Wireless Internet card

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Credit Card

9. When are you purchasing? next few weeks

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Probably build myself or ask a friend if I run into complications. If building is available before sending, then yes.

That's without a monitor, mightn't have enough for a Catleap. If you really want a Catleap, you could go 7950 or GTX 670 crossfire/SLI. You could also drop your PSU down to a 750 watt then.

Catleap was just a notion I put in his head last night, not a necessity :P

That case is far nicer than what we were looking at. Good stuff ya lucky git.

I can spend a bit more. Willing to go to about 2.5k for everything, including keyboard and monitor. Maybe an i7 and 16Gb of RAM? :P (Overkill!). And Might add another 1Tb Hard Drive.
And 2 frickin Graphics cards of that quality! Awesome

E-Bs build is a beast but when you say everything is there going to be some serious stuff involved? (not that you can get more serious than gaming ofc!)

I'm thinking video editing etc?

Try as I might I cant get the script thing to work with the build I've just done.

Basically the same as E-Bs but double the storage order so you can RAID 0 the SSDs and RAID 1 the Storage.
i7-3770K - only useful if more seriousness is needed
16Gb RAM - not needed but I like 16Gb
2 x 7950 - these will still be amazing
3 x 23" Monitors - for eyefinity

Comes in at around 2.5K but bear in mind for an e-peen errrr computer that expensive you need to spend around €120 on a good KB and mouse.

Well, This PC is going to have to work for a long time!
So If I get it high-end enough now, it shouldn't be TOO out of date in a while.
And the thing is, I want it to be ABLE to do anything, including video editing. Gaming is the main use, but there are loads of things I wanna try/do, etc.

The i5 3570k still is a beast of a processor, it's great for video editing if you want to do it.

Is there a whole lot of difference having 2 graphics cards? I mean, this one is pretty powerful itself. Does it make it 2x better?

You're looking at more like 1.5X rather that two times with SLI/Crossfire setups.

I wouldn't get the 3930k, way too expensive for very little performance gain over the 3570k. Don't get that 670 either, it's reference design - go for an aftermarket 670 cooler like the Asus/Gigabyte/MSI Power Edition cards.

Yeah, as I said the other night man, the 3930 is useful only in very specific and rare situations.

About the GPUs, think of it this way. Now, you probably wont need the power of 2X7970s, but in 2 years you might. If the CPU is too slow by then you'll be able to pick up another newer CPU for that socket easy, so it gives you a good few years of being in the vanguard.

Bit off topic as you're clearly going for a bit of an e-peen build (nothing wrong with that!)

You be much better off spending 1500 now and 1000 - 1500 again in 2 - 3 years.

If you go for a great case and monitor you won't need them again. You'll end up with much better kit for the same money.

I dont want to hijack your thread but I do wonder what the diminishing returns curve really starts tro bite.

As he guys here have rightly said a 3570K is a beast its really only very specific applications that need anything better.

I dunno. I mean, I want a good gaming PC atm,
Especially with a few games I'm looking forward to coming out soon,
And I know that In the computer world, new stuff comes out like, every week,
SO you'll always be a bit outdated :P
I'm confident that this PC would be powerful enough to run anything for the next few years at least :P Plus, I have the money now. If I hung onto it, I might not have it this time next year ;P

LOL I know exactly what you mean.

A €1500 build will run anything for the next 3 years easily. If you are going to spend 2.5K get really good stuff that will last and skimp on the internal components a bit. Well when I say skimp just get top of the mid range (3570K, 7950 or 670 - that typ of thing) rather than some hex core beast and a crap monitor and case.

I will say this though - look at the guys here and their build sigs - its all (mainly) best bang for buck new overclocked stuff rather than premium top of the line stock stuff.

A lot of games with the SLI GTX 670s can show nearly perfect scaling.

That said, the benchmarks posted are all GPU-limited. If you take a game like Skyrim or Starcraft 2 you won't see much improvement. That's not the Graphics cards' fault though.

then blow up your machine because you havent cleaned it in 5 years and 2 4870s chuck out enough heat to melt a polar ice cap

I just checked HWVS now, looks to me like the samsung 830 ssd you wanted in in stock right now. Although there's probably not much difference between it and a crucial one..

Does running dual AMD gpus take a lot more juice than dual nvidias? Just wondering cos 850W seems like a lot, but I'm not an expert on that.
