As seen in the above example, I have noticed this on many aircraft.

Is it used for radar or something?

I've only ever heard of passengers having Wifi on internal US flights. Are there any European Airlines (obviously there is) that do this, or Long Haul/Trans Atlantic wifi services? Would be a great feature.

The US airlines have it but use ground based systems. I except that the Norwegian system uses a Ku-Band satellite system. Lufthansa, Malaysian, emirates an BA (on their LCY-JFK route) offer Wi-Fi access. I know tht LH and EK use the Panasonic Aeromobile system.

We may well see more of these units fitted on some aircraft in DUB in a few months. Delta are installing Wi-Fi on their whole fleet, however the process will take 2-3 years from now to complete, according to Delta themselves.

Norweigan (the aircraft pictured) have free wifi on many of their aircraft, but not all yet.

I used it a few weeks ago between Bergen and Oslo. The Oslo to Dublin leg however used an older aircraft and no wifi.

It works ok and is handy for checking mail, facebook, web news, but not much else. It flicks between working and not as you go.

I do know 12 months ago for private jets fitted with Wifi it cost €60 per minute to be connected.

Yeah its wi-fi! I flew Oslo to Stockholm with Norwegian earlier in the year and the A/C had it! My phone was showing the network as available but was unable to connect! I don't know was the problem on my end or theirs, or how good the system is yet
