Wire baskets or regular shelves in kitchen units?

My fiancé and I disagree on whether to put wire baskets or regular shelves in our kitchen units. I feel that there will be less room to put things in, as we'd be constrained by weight, and he feels that when we're older we'd prefer to have the option to slide the baskets out rather than having to stoop down to the shelves. Any ideas?

You could consider slide out baskets that are not wire in that case, that was our comprise ;-)
There basically like pull out drawers.i think they hold a lot more than the wire ones and weight shouldn't be a problem.

Bring your partner to Frank Flanagan Fittings in the Airport Business Park and have a walk through their showrooms and fully fitted kitchens.

They stock every type of kitchen fitting you could ever wish to see.:)

Ive dealt with them before and their range of drawer systems and kitchen storage ideas is unreal indeed.:)

I have double width slide out drawers (not baskets) in a tall cupboard which I use to store all dry foodstuff. So much better than shelves, you can find everything easily and easy to tidy and clean also. Less likely to have have stuff at the back of the press that you forget about! I think I was told the drawer takes 20/30kg weight. Probably more expensive than baskets though but worth it.

    Hi,

I would definitely go to a showroom as paddy suggested and look at all the various mechanisms.

However, an awful lot of them are ulimately valueless gimics and nothing more. I've seen "magic corner" mechanisms that were so big that they ate up the space that they were supposed to be giving access to.

Pull out baskets (wire or otherwise) aren't as practical as made out.
Drawers pretty much give the exact same benefits of the baskets and are really good as already stated. You can't fit them right to the top of the units or you won't be able to see what's in them though. In reality you can't have them more that 1 unit higher than a standard counter top or you'll needs steps to see into them.

We got a new kitchen a few months ago. We've 2 pull out larders which are very useful for cooking items etc. We also have quite a number of drawers and but none over counter top height.

I would also ask that you consider your age and that kitchens don't last forever. It may be that in 20 - 25 years you'll want to change it even if you got one that has managed to last that long.

Very best of luck with this.

    SAS
