    What's your unpopular opinion?

That it should be ok to call a black person a negro?

But they're not "negroes" as that word has acquired negative connotations since it was commonly used as a purely descriptive term. Would you also like to call black people "blackamoors?"

Words change meaning and it's childish to want to use a word that was once a scientific classificatory term but has now evolved into a racist term.

That's what bugs me about people who say they should be able to say the word "negro." They act like it's a completely innocent word when they know full well that it would now be seen as a racial slur. Why choose to use that word when you can just say "black people?"

The only reason someone would want to say "negro" to a black person would be if they were racist.
    Are you racist, Longfellow?

Well, I'll confess to a prejudice: I really hate trolls. Now don't get me wrong, there are some trolls who are entertaining and add something to the community. But it seems like most trolls these days are rubbish. They're loud and obnoxious, without the wit to appear genuine, really wind people up and keep arguments going. They just spout obnoxious rubbish and either get banned really quickly or wuss out and close their accounts after a few posts.

    Do you agree?

Just as Cuba, USSR, East Germany, Poland, North Korea etc have?

Communism is a great idea when you're 18 and don't know better.

Because we're in rude health at the moment arent we?!

You mentioned Cuba. For one benefit of communism, compare their health service with that of our own.

Yes we're in pretty rude health to be honest. Most people are employed, very little in the way of real poverty, a generous welfare system for those out of work. Not too bad at all.

I take you've never been to Cuba, then?

Uneducated in the literal sense. They don't learn about it in school. News reports are sporadic and out of context.

Actually I have been to Cuba. Travelled about too, not just Varadero beach resort.

It's talking to the ordinary man on the street which formed my opinion. Their happy with their lot.

You really do have a rose tinted view of our present situation.

Maybe it's because I've travelled to over 50 countries worldwide and Ireland is in a better state than at least 35 of them.

Or maybe it's because I'm loaded.

Well news reports were also full of inaccuracies that fueled popular opinion and as a result fueled the bigotry on both sides.

Agreed there. At one point SF members couldn't speak on TV and news reports opened with the words "IRA terriorists" etc.

Im not even talking about sinn fienn. The daily mail asociated and still asociates the civil rights movement with the Ira. They played a part in the deaths caused in northern Ireland.

Umm, maybe because the IRA were terrorists? Or is murdering kids an integral part of freedom fighting? You may notice that Northern Ireland is still under British rule. You achieved nothing. IRA = I Ran Away.

My unpopular opinion: Bobby Sands was a dirty scumbag who smeared shiite all over his own cell (really getting back at the Brits there) and I'm glad he is dead.

Ira should thank the British for their membership. It was the British who gave the Ira the biggest recruitment drives in the north. By the way the civil rights movement were not the ira. The fact that the British described them as such ended an chance of peaceful resolution. What sums it up for me is the following statement made after bloody sunday by Ivan cooper.
I just want to say this to the British Government... You know what you've just done, don't you? You've destroyed the civil rights movement, and you've given the IRA the biggest victory it will ever have. All over this city tonight, young men... boys will be joining the IRA. and

The "dirty scumbag" had nothing to do with the Ira until he was forced out of his job at gun point by the loyalists because of his religion. If he wanted to protest for equal rights he couldnt because the British government made civil rights marchs illegal. The British government might aswell have out out a bulliten saying we dont no under any circumstances want peaceful resolution to this problem.
