Elvis. I heard the news on the radio at 4 o clock in the morning while at work. He truly was the King.

I wouldn't say it upset me but when Richard Wright of Pink Floyd died. I would have loved to see them live, now it'll never happen.

I suppose Syd Barrett gets a mention too.

Haven't read through the whole thread but has anyone mentioned that Katy model woman who died of an overdose a few years ago. Never understood the national grief on that one, very odd.

Bizarrely the death of Steve Irwin did actually trouble me somewhat.

I was on my way to work in the car very early in the morning and heard the bad news on the radio. Yeah he was a bit of an eejit but the guy was full of life and a bit of a character and his extremely sudden and unexpected death left me a bit gloomy for the rest of the day.

May his annoying face and animal tormenting soul rest in peace.:)

You married a woman named Senna?
No, no, no... Clearly he meant that he gave the dog a pet called Senna. I'm guessing that it was a rodent of some kind.

    Rosa Parks.

I wasn't really upset, I didn't cry or anything, but I was saddened by her death. I was always aware of her and what she did and admired her. I reckon I'll have to buy a book on her. Cool, brave chick.

Can't think of any famous person that affected me but 2 cases that did would have been Phoebe Prince who was basically bullied to death and it's tough when a 15 year old kid sees no way out only death.

Also the Baby P case. RIP to them both.

tbh I have been more shocked than genuinely upset. Most deceased musicians/ artists have been from before I actually got into them. Darren Sutherlands suicide was a big one to read on RTE news over here mind, given the potential he had. Had gotten up early to watch all the Irish Beijing Olympic boxing back home so it was some shock. Ronnie Drew and George Best in some ways too, but tbh given they were both of advanced years and liked a drink it was hardly unexpected.

I'm not one to care much for celebrity culture but I was genuinely saddened by Michael Jackson's death.

Great performer whose naivety was abused from childhood until he was a grown man, who couldn't live life the way we all take for granted despite making an awful lot of money and whose reputation was destroyed by people he trusted. Now that he's finally at peace, his scumbag family continue to use his name to make themselves money despite inheriting a fortune from him.

    Poor oul Michael.

Witnessing Amy Winehouse's addiction claim her and end such a great talent upset me like I didn't think any celebrity's death would... apart from how David Attenborough's will which I'm not sure will be happening anytime soon judging by the form he was in on Graham Norton recently!

Senna when I was a kid really upset me, still does a bit. Garrett Fitzgerald a bit, admired him I did. This I know is really pathetic but Gerry Ryan's death upset me

Phil Harris from Deadliest Catch, what a legend. Was kind of saddened when he died.

For me I would say it's Ronnie James Dio, one of the greatest vocalists of rock \ metal ever, and in particular his work with Richie Blackmore's band Rainbow.

    RIP, Ronnie.

    Has anyone mentioned JFK jr?

I was only 10 when he died so it's only in the last few years I have come to understand what his passing meant. Can't help but think "What if he had become president?"

I don't know if he was purposefully taken out but the whole thing reeks to me. Here was a guy self-publishing a magazine that would make any conspiracy theorist wet themselves with glee, he was adamant that he was going to get to the bottom of who really killed his father and just prior to his death he finally decided to throw his hat into the political ring.

It just.. hit me badly. One less seagull on the shoreline. The starfish of time makes its way slowly across the pebbles of destiny.

I doubt JFK jnr was ever going to be president had he not died. He was more of a celebrity playboy type than a politician.

Come to think of it, the death of Anna Nicole Smith had a very profound effect on me. She was so young and didn't deserve to die. I took a few days off work after hearing about it and wore black in mourning. Just didn't understand why she had to die.

George Best was the only one.
