Wrong gas meter number at house

In short, I went to close my account with the gas crowd and when I gave them the reading they told me it was totally wrong. A quick check revealed they have the wrong meter number at our house and for the last 3 years have been estimating the readings from the wrong start point. thing is how can they estimate the readings…

how do they estimate what gas I use ?

Do you have a record of the meter reading when you moved in? If so it should be simple enough to calculate.

If not I reckon you are in a very strong position to broker a deal with the gas company.
