Flooding in Cork and Belfast

Just wondering after watching the flooding in Cork and Belfast and was wondering where is the main entry point for the water into the houses in this type of flooding situation?

Yesterday looked like that the rivers burst their banks and that the water was flowing down the streets so would the main entry point have been through the front and back doors into a house? Or would water have come up through the toilets as well?

The reason being if there were to be a flood protection device fitted to the doors would it be of much use?
