For me, it has to be Marco Simoncelli. He was only 24 and tragically killed at the Sepang MotoGP last year. I still well up when I see footage or pics. He was a legend in the making for sure!

Paul Hunter - I'm not a snooker fan at all but I remember when he was making a name for himself and how much colour he brought to the game.
Also, he was a little younger than me and it really upset me to think that his little girl would grow up without knowing her father.

I was sad when Brittany Murphy died, Patrick Swayze died the same year although it was not as sudden as Brittany's death it was still very sad.

I think the investigation into the sudden death of Brittany Murphy and her boyfriend has been re-opened actually.

When she died, I assumed it was just a typical overdose or maybe eating disorder gone too far.
But then her boyfriend died under similar circumstances, which was quite suspicious I thought.

    Tupac Shakur

And the mystery and stories around his death is still annoying

This book is about as close as we will ever come to knowing the truth

Surprised at how few people mentioned Tupac.
I was 13 when he died and thought - "Good Riddance, one less scumbag, etc."
Within 3 years, I was one of his greatest fans.
The tragedy of Tupac is that his untimely passing is representative of too many young black men in this country....If we had lost Oprah Winfrey at 25, we would have lost a relatively unknown, local market TV anchorwoman. If we had lost Malcolm X at 25, we would have lost a hustler named Detroit Red. And if I had left the world at 25, we would have lost a big-band trumpet player and aspiring composer--just a sliver of my eventual life potential.

Elvis died before most of us were alive/aware of him.

Most of the people mentioned in the thread, I cannot even relate to.
Colin McRae, Senna. I would barely know who those people are and quite surprised by how prominent they are here.

I have an annoying habit of not being exposed to fascinating people until they die.
    e.g. Christopher Hitchens, George Carlin
I don't lament the loss of the person until after they're gone, because I usually don't realise what is lost until it's too late.

The only major exception to this rule will be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
When he dies, it will truely be the end of an era.

If there is any one death I wish I could go back in time to prevent, it would probably be Michael Collins.
The Mongol Empire would have never happened without Genghis Khan there to unite the tribes and build it. It couldn't be anyone else, it had to be Genghis Khan in particular.

I happen to believe a similar thing about independent Ireland and Collins.
We finally got independence, then we lost the man we needed to make it worthwhile. D'oh!

Elvis died before most of us were alive/aware of him.

So did Bill Shankly. Don't be a mug.

When Ray D'arcy left the Den - I remember being a young boy though not yet a teenager. Perhaps not an actual death but it was certainly the last time I remember D'arcy being entertaining.

    RIP RAY.

Brian Clough. No one will ever achieve what he did. Never. One of a kind.

Because he entertained us all, even well into his retirement. Drink had already done the damage to his liver though, and he went way before his time. Had he kept away from the bottle he could easily still be managing Forest in the top division.

People who actually get upset by the deaths of celebrities are idiots.

I reserve my emotions for when the person matters to me personally..in my life..my life in the real world.

That's not to say I've never felt a bit 'aww that's terribly sad'-like and sympathised with the person and their family.

Its not fair to call them idiots. People become emotionally attached to famous people they admire especially if they relate to them in some sort. remember the massive outpouring of grief there was for Diana or Pope JP. Its not the same grief as if someone close dies but its still grief all the same!

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I was upset but I was saddened when Dermot Morgan passed away.

For me, it was Princess Diana. I was ironing my uniform for work (I was doing Sunday 24-hour call), hubby was listening to the radio and shouted to me that Charles was dead. I was like "Oh, right", but my reaction changed very quickly when he said "Oh, wait a minute it's Diana!".

GG Allin. It would have been cool if he had killed himself on stage the way he said he would. He ended up dying from drug overdose which isn't nearly as bad ass.

 Mother of sweet divine!! I just googled this - WTF? Now I feel sick, why would you get upset over that death

If he were managing today I don't think the P.C brigade or FA would be too enamored with his views on homosexuality. :D

like a few posters here i was never overly upset at celeb deaths, more of an "oh. That's a pity, He/She seemed nice/talented" etc. but i was more saddened by Phil Harris's death, as he seemed like an ordinary bloke, especially the way he was supporting the younger son with his addiction problem.

Had forgotten about Paul Hunter until someone mentioned him. i remember the tribute thay had to him on the BBC SPOTY thing, i had a wee tear or two in my eye at that one alright...

Tommy Cooper. I was watching the show on TV the night he collasped and died on stage and of course great laughs from the audience. Show quickly went to commercial and nothing was said about it until the next day. That was 1984. Only recently, for another thread, did I google the clip again to see it and it was even more tragic this time round knowing what was happening.

At least he went out doing what he loved.
