If I was old enough in 1994 I would have said Aryton Senna.

But lately I really can't think of anyone... Possibly Michael Jackson as it was very unexpected and everyone was really looking forward to his comeback.

I was very saddened by the death of Andy Whitfield. Most people, except fans of Spartacus probably had never even heard of him. He was young and fit, and contracted a disease through no fault of his own. He beat the cancer at first, enough to start preparing for the second season. And thenl it came back. I was sure that his decision to quit the show and concentrate on his health would be enough to help him beat it a second time. The last I'd heard he was getting better, and then ... news he'd died. Only 37. Makes me sad watching re-runs of the first series again.

Not many celebrity deaths have really upset me. I can't think of any recent deaths where I felt that their best work was still ahead of them.

When my interest in astronomy was in its infancy (still is), a relative gave me a collection of DVDs of 'The Sky At Night', and so began my affair with Sir Patrick Moore.

He's not dead, but he is very elderly and ailing.

After years of watching his show and reading his books, I feel connected to him and his thoughts, and I know when he goes that it'll affect me deeply, as his work and his personality have.

When I heard the tragic story of his fiancees death while he served in the RAF in WW2, and how he never married after losing her, I felt such sadness. Mostly though, I think he's the Grandad I would have loved to have had. :)

Sadly, in todays Telegraph, he states he wishes his life had ended 10 years ago. Health issues mean he can no longer operate his telescope :(

    He's one of my heroes.

GG Allin. It would have been cool if he had killed himself on stage the way he said he would. He ended up dying from drug overdose which isn't nearly as bad ass.

Not so much upset more sad but the two that spring to mind

Douglas Adams a great author whom I read his books multiple times

and Kirsty MacColl singer who died saving her son. A needless and sad end to a young life.

A Scottish Folk / Blues guitarist named Bert Jansch, who died in October last. He was a shy, enigmatic talent and a big influence on Jimmy Page, Jonny Marr, Nick Drake & Neil Young.

First heard him in my early 20's and his playing absolutely floored me, real goosebumps stuff. I was away on business in NYC when I read of his passing, and experienced what can only be termed as a 'manly misting'.

Eva Cassidy. It wasn't until a couple of years after she passed away that I realised how much she was soo right. It really is a pity but yet I now feel honoured that her music has made such an imprint on my life.....

I heard of Steve Irwins death when a friend rang me as I stood in a queue in Pennys. They had a big box of little tiger keyrings by the till for two euro each, and I thought it appropriate to buy a scoop of them and give them to people I know as Steve Irwin memorial tigers. Weird I know, but most people I gave them to still have them and know them as that.

Ayrton Senna. I watched the race live as a teenager in the living room, thinking the crash didnt look that bad. Still haunts me to this day. The film last year caused a few lumps in the throat.

I can still sit here watching youtube videos on mute of the great man with moody music on in the background. :o 18 years. Scary how fast times goes.

Fair sprinkling of names I've never heard of - maybe I'm just not into celebrity but a famous person dying means nothing to me.
Anyone here prepared to admit they were upset when Jade Goody went on her way ?

I think the jade goody cervical cancer thing was tragic - one thing it did do was highlight the fact so few women went for check ups and they tried to lower the age so i suppose that was one positive result..

    Ronnie James Dio
    An absolute LEGEND
The little man had a HUGE voice, defined what the hard rock vocalist should be.
    One thing gave me goosebumps,
    this picture.................

A pic that made me simply stop and stare with awe. What a personality and what strength..... I will always remember his voice as a soundtrack to my youth......A Light in the Black.... R.I.P. R.J.D.

Steve Irwin, loved that guy's enthusiasm for animals and nature. Aye he was a bit touched, but sure most of us are anyway. Thought it was great that he wanted to share his knowledge with the world.

Has to be Brian Lenihan , the c*** should have lived to see the mess he created

what a pleasant person you are.

What's wrong with this choice? It didn't have to be someone you loved, it's a death that saddened you. For whatever reason.

For me Ayrton Senna...I haven't watched a full race since..really broke my heart.
Also Colin McRea's death along with his young son and 2 friends hurt me ....

Gary Speed's death really got me. I was going through depression at the time so it was a real shocker. And also seeing as he was on Football Focus the day before in what seemed to be a jolly mood.

I was never a fan of his but Ive got to say Gerry Ryans death got to me. His radio show was the soundtrack of my youth - my mother had him on constantly in the house or the car. Slipping off school for a dental appt or a half day or whatever - Gerry Ryan was always there on the car radio and I came to associate him with my childhood. Having said that I was DISGUSTED with myself years later when I caught myself listening to his show!

The poor mother was devastated by his passing - though it didnt touch Princess Di's death! Remember watching the funeral with her and we were both in tears - she lost her parents at 5 & 8 so seeing the boys follow the coffin broke our hearts...

    Barney mckenna.

Cried over that one. Listening to him the night before, I wish I had someone to love me...always brought a tear to my eye. Hearing that he died was so sad for me. My mum was good friends with Luke Kelly so I'd say his death was one I would hear about a lot and would often sadden me.

I was touched by Ryan's death too.. I loved the guys show in the mornings and wouldn't miss it for the world.

I used to joke that he set my moral compass for the day.

I think in the end he was a sad, selfish, pathetic loser ~ and I mourn that too because those qualities lead directly to the man's death.

I went to his removal too, very sad.
