I was having the 'Where were you when..." conversation last night and got to the death of famous people.

For me the passing of Michael Jackson really got to me. I was a huge fan all my life. (I know I may get ridiculed for that here on AH).

Surprisingly, the passing of Steve Irwin got me as well :o

Princess Diana as well. I remember waking up in the middle of the night with the urge to switch on the tv about a minute before the news broke.

Georgie Best was another biggy for me! Apart from his talent he seemed a genuine and funny guy. His funeral had me in tears!

Are there any that stand out for you?

None tbh, I don't see how I could grieve over somebody I never had any personal contact with just because they were famous.

I would say the only times I shed tears for anybody I didn't know was in tragic instances like watching 9/11 unfolding and the poor people deciding that jumping from the twin towers was the better option of a quick death....heartbreaking! :(

I know! Just wish he'd die already! They tried nailing him to a cross and that didn't work...I guess aiming for the head might...

Princess Di ... I was so feckin hungover, in bed about an hour when the mammy came running up the hall shouting 'she's dead'... I know your not supposed to feel pain after the fact but I still remember the pain between my eyes that lasted all day. Upsetting? Damn right, I need my 12 hrs after a session of pints.

There's a a thread on Bobby Sands death from a few months back, Febuary I think. I described the scene's and feeling at the time.

You also have to remember Ballymun had a huge northern Irish 'refugee' (thats what we called them lol) population at the time.

We (the community) also had regular republican rallies in the fields, speakers included former prisoners, hunger strikers, politican figures etc

I know it might all seem a little strange to people now but thats how things were at the time.

When Sands died there was a massive out pouring of public grief in the area. Almost every window and lamp post flew a black flag. Its all in another thread.

yup agree with that, particulary with his young son and friend suffering the same fate in that crash

*sigh* No it hasn't, you just haven't been looking in the right places for it...
I like Nirvana and all but to think that good music somehow died with Kurt Cobain is beyond laughable.

Yeah Steve Irwin's death got to me a little too. Probably the only one that did actually.

Never been affected in any way by the death of any famous person or any major international event or disaster. It has no practical impact on my life so I would be pretending to care, which I suspect a lot of people do anyway.

Veronica Guerin, It felt like the scum were about to take over and I'd always liked her journalism. I suppose you can feel closer to a journalist because you read their words and see them in the media.

Joey Dunlop, 5 time Formula 1 World Champion, 26 times winner of the Isle of Man TT Races, Humanitarian - having watched him race from the late 70's till he lost his life in 2000, in my eye's Joey had that extra quality as a Sports Star

Steve Irwin :( Used to watch all his shows, and tbh he brought out the animal lover in me. I loved watching him get so close to the animals and when I was young when I was asked what I wanted to be I would say like Steve Irwin xD He was a true inspiration and made watching animals fun and interesting. I think it was so upsetting 'cause I was young and it was unexpected. I don't think anyone thought he would be killed by an animal, he seemed so natural and in tune with them.
