Old mercs are fine. Well screwed together cars with tough engines. They just don't have any character. They are all basically the same design just bigger or smaller or with different headlights.

Is it because when the guys that drive them now were younger to own a Merc back then meant you had made it in the world? Mercedes were always expensive in this country.
Where as Mercedes nowadays just doesn't have the kudos in Ireland that it did back in the 70s.

    Mercs have no character!?
    And a Cortina has!!??lol
Cant imagine anyone outside of Ireland and UK who would look twice at a Cortina regardless of age.
Bland, cheap at the time, characterless,no power, bog standard equipment zero style in fact had absolutely nothing going for it.
    Each to their own.

    Each to their own.

In my humble opinion, an old Merc will have, pretty much across the range,
    A. A big springy matress of a seat that's never comfortable.
    B. A big ships wheel of a steering wheel.
    C. Ignition switch on the wrong side.
    D. If Irish, Zero spec. Absolutely zero.
    E. If Diesel, it will sound, and drive, like a tractor.

And before you have a go, i have a 2.0i 1990 190E that is English spec, electric windows, electric sunroof etc. but it's still got the steering wheel from the Titanic. It is extremely well screwed together, but its not that different from the 123 series before it.
Just my opinion. Don't take it as a dig.
I do think the newer Mercs are great, but I'd buy a Lexus anyways! No one builds them like the Japanese do.

    !

that turn out was surprisingly low...there are a lot more around than that, particularly Mk1 and 2 which ten years ago would be all you would have seen at a show! There was very little publicity about the 50th birthday celebrations which in any case isnt really until September.

Regretably the Cortina Club (who were not the Organisers) are not the dynamic club they were and for their own reasons dont go out of their way to attract new members.

Sad, considering the "institution" the Cortina once was in Ireland. It played a big part in Irelands commercial history in the 60's and 70's.
    The original repmobile.

Probably the daftest thing I've ever heard. :) That and the Cortina thing -My Dad had a 1962 4 door 1200 De Lux in Maroon Cortina. It seemed huge at the time!
Like most modern German stuff the old ones were better than the current ones with VAG as an one exception, the other exception being BMW - they were always rubbish. Again my Dad had a 1500 BMW which was so bad that he successfully sued BMW for his money back plus costs. Then he bought another Cortina .....
Old Mercs and nearly old VW's is where its at for me ......

In my opinion most clubs have members who like to show there superiority which can be off putting to new members.

Never thought I'd get a Merc, but got an E200 then an S320 and an E430.
Parts available from Otto, brakes take 1hr to change (front AND rear pads), so can never see myself going off them especially as they have a factory support for classic parts and restoration -

    http://www.mercedes-benz-classic.com/content/classic/mpc/mpc_classic_website/en/mpc_home/mbc/home/classic/classic_center.html

Not saying the build quality was the best 99 - 05 but once your know the parts that go you're prepared.

Just watching a programme about German car breakers - one of the brothers has a nice 164, red with cream leather, the other has a 262 coupe.
Ex Archbishop Ryan of Dublin had a met. blue 164 back in the day, and I'm not sure if Uachtarain Paddy Hillary had a 264 - both members of Portmarnock Golf Club

This Citroen DS is used by one of my neighbours as his regular summer runabout, just grabbed a pic when he wasn't looking outside the school.

    WP_000388.jpg

There was also a Volvo picking up at the school the other day but I am so tuned out to anything Volvo shaped that it wasn't until it was driving away that I noticed it was the rarer Bertone 780 coupé, too late to get a snap but I must keep a look out for it as it looked to be in very nice condition.

They were mainly intended for the american marked, so would be extremely rare over here. Definatly would love to see a picture of that.

'68 Vette T-top with fresh paint, the owner came back while I was looking at in and got in using finger tips!

Morry Minor also with very fresh looking paint, looked very well but let down by a very modern looking aerial.

I may have posted a pic of this car before, it's the daily driver of a neighbour of the outlaws.
