I've done a fair bit of reading lately. Started with the Steve Jobs Biography (Loved it!!) and now I'm going onto 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (I'm really excited to read this!) and then I'm going onto a book called 'Sex, Lies and Politics' (recommend by a friend). If the Fifty Shades book goes well, I'll continue with the series. Anyone read any of them yet? :)

I've read the whole Shades trilogy and I enjoyed it the main thing is the sex scenes are often hugely relevant to the story but most of the time I didn't think they were great.some very cringey writing though but I like the actual story.

Finished His Dark Materials. Turns out I was right, SO much of it went over my head when I was younger! It was even more incredible this time round, I'd highly recommend anyone to read/re-read it!

Just finished Trinity by Leon Uris and, at the insistence of my mother, going to read Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. She claims it's one of the best books ever so hopefully I'll enjoy it! :)

I'm considering reading that this summer, it always looks so intimidating and it seems it too when people talk about it so I don't know :o Let me know what you think about it? :)

Will do! :) I think I'll probably read it through as when I start reading a book I feel I can't stop reading it once I've got in so far as I feel I will have failed!:p

Everyone get it! It's a grand read and not too difficult to get through. Oblonsky is one of my favourite characters ever.

I've been reading so much since summer started :D Just finished 'Insurgent' by Veronica Roth, the sequel to 'Divergent' - I really like them, they're not my absolute favourites but they are very enjoyable and really draw you in. Just started 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt as I've heard so much about it.

Perfume by Patrick Suskind.. was listening to du riechst so gut by Rammstein some day and Google told me it was inspired by this book so said to myself why not...

it's a very interesting read so far - definitely different to anything I've ever read before but enjoying it a lot I have to say...

Reading The Help and no book has made me cry as much - the film isn't bad either! :) Hoping to start on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest when I'm done. I tried to get into it last year, but I don't think I was mature enough at the time to handle such heavy material :)

Read it 11 times.. The Help is the definition of epic :D :')

Finished The Help about a month ago and it is a seriously epic book. I only read it because we watched like 15 mins of the film in a French class (why I have no idea what-so-ever) before Christmas and even from those few minutes I just had a feeling it would be awesome! And it seriously was. :)

Just finished The Slap which was fairly good. There were a fair few affairs going on and I was confused as hell for the first chapter or two because there were a good few characters and I just couldn't remember who was married to who or related to who and having a affair with someone else or getting drugs from another person.....I think I figured it out though eventually.

Next up on my reading list is Dead Europe (by the same fella that wrote The Slap). I had it since my birthday but I've only just worked my way through my pile of books to it now. I just hope there aren't any extra-marital goings-on in this one, I think I've had my fair share for now I think......

And when that's finished I've no more new books left :( so it'll bee back to the auld reliables and the books that I haven't read in aaaaages starting with the His Dark Materials trilogy. I remember reading Northern Lights when I was in 1st year when I was 12/13 for a book review. I had serious love for those books even though I knew there was so much stuff that I didn't understand at the time. I'm neraly getting excited about reading them again just at the thoughts of it already.....

    In short: me + books = <3<3<3

Way ahead of you, ordered it from amazon yesterday

Just finished a book about North Korea called Nothing to Envy and it was a lot better than I expected, had to keep reminding myself that it was all true though.

Read that a few months ago, interesting stuff. I actually still struggle to believe the stories though, crazy...

Anyway, I got a Kindle. I think anyone who's struggling to make themselves read should get one, I was awful there for a while but that's all changed now. In the last two days I have read The Perks of Being A Wallflower (didn't think much of it while I was reading it but when I finished it I thought 'wow, that was great') and Of Mice And Men (only took an hour and a half, yay for short books giving me a false sense of achievement...but yeah, good read, saw the ending coming a mile off but it still made me feel sad :(). Also kinda reading Imperium by Robert Harris but I'm just kinda going over and back between other books. And I'm reading The Diary of Anne Frank (how have I not read this before?) and I might get a start on finally re-reading His Dark Materials myself (which seems to be a popular choice) tomorrow. Much love for copious amounts of great books at ehh bargain prices! :pac:

This is also on my list for after HDM seeing as my brother bought it and is reading it himself.

My list now comprises of: Dead Europe, HDM, Anne Frank, The Host and the Hunger Games (which my brother also bought with the book voucher that college sent him months ago for last years results......)

I better get me skates on so.

Two veteran boards members who haven't read her diary??? :O Sorry, it's nothing personal towards either of you - I'm just a little shocked is all. I must've read that book 5 times in the past 2/3 years. My belief in my generation is fading fast
That book should be mandatory reading material in all schools :pac:

Speaking of, I should probably read that again. I think I was ten when I read it and haven't touched it since...

I just don't find it all that interesting to read... *awaits angry replies*

I know it's awful that I haven't read it and it's a bit strange I haven't seeing as I actually love all that war-kinda stuff.

I think I have read bits and pieces from it in various places over the years but I've never read the whole thing. I remember in about 5th class there was a copy of it in our classroom library but I never got to it because someone else always had it so I never bothered with it after that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,298 ✭✭✭Namlub

Yeah I think I read half of it in like 4th class but I've never finished it...

Fifty shades of grey. Surprised the twilight woman didn't say something about copyright, a lot of this is eerily similar to twilight. In phrases and words and stuff, fifty shades avoids the terrible vampires at least.

I decided to give dystopian books a break for a while.

The last few I've read are kitchen confidential by anthony bourdain which was quite a good read, it gives good insights into the life a chef, if somewhat exaggerated in parts. I enjoyed it anyway. Then I read "My Life in France" which was basically about how Julia Child became Julia Child, I found it really interesting.

At the moment I'm reading The Diary of Anne Frank after all the talk about it here I decided it was time to re-read it, I haven't read it since first year in school. I downloaded a good few books on my kindle a while ago so have quite a bit of reading to do, the line up at the moment is to re-read his dark materials, I haven't read them since I was a kid. Then I've The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm and A Clockwork Orange, haven't read any of them before so I'm looking forward to it!

I've been reading all of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Quite enjoyable I must say, although I'm getting wiser to Holmes' methods now and can often guess what the solution will be.
