    92 Min Bike, 35.70 km, Av Spd 23.54 km/h, AHR 124, MHR 153

Legs were a little lifeless after yesterday's run and the roads were surprisingly greasy after a small shower so I decided to take it handy and just get some miles in the legs. I've missed so many bike sessions lately that it's almost like I'm starting from scratch.

Anyway, although the legs are tried they're not sore or tight as I gave them a good stretch after yesterday's run and spent 20 minutes on the foam roller last night too.

Feeling really good about getting back into it now and looking forward to the SKT in August.

Big show last weekend starting on Thursday and lasting until Monday evening. I got 5 sessions done between Monday and Wednesday as I knew that even with the best of intentions I wouldn't get them done over the weekend. Still managed to miss one bike and one run session though, but bills have to be paid.

    Wednesday 6/5/2012

    95 Min Run, 13.50 km, Pace 6:58 m/km, AHR 143, MHR 156

First day back after a mad weekend and absolutely shattered, slept for about 11 solid hours and still felt like crap warmed up. The forecast for the rest of the week is bad so decided to get out for my LSR which was probably a bad idea considering how I felt.

Turns out I was right. Legs felt heavy and I just wanted to lie down and sleep all the way round. No pain, just plain exhaustion. My speed was way down for my slow runs and my AHR was towards the higher end but I got it done. I can't help feeling that it was wasted miles though.

I'm looking out the window now at the trees bent sideways and the rain bucketing down, but after reading Oryx's excellent blog I feel shamed into HTFU'ing and just getting out there.

    52 Min Run, 9.00 km, Pace 5:47 m/km, AHR 156, MHR 171

After feeling both inspired and ashamed by Oryx's 20 mile run at 4am this morning, I put on my running tights, long sleeve jersey and wind vest and headed out into the wind and rain to see what happens.

As it turns out, I really enjoyed this run and am thoroughly glad I did it. I always tend to enjoy these steady sessions more than the LSR's or speed sessions as I really feel like they're making me fitter. I understand the LSR's are important, but when they're over I just feel tired rather than fitter.

I have to add that reading other people's logs really inspire and motivate me and there was a really good chance I would have skipped today had I not read about Oryx's fine example of persistence and commitment.

    Friday 8/6/2012

    60 Min Run, 11.00 km, Pace 5:27 m/km, AHR 155, MHR 181

    10 min Warm Up
    10 x 2 min fast, 2 min jog
    10 min Cool Down

I was away working again so did this session around Tramore. It was meant to be 10 x hill intervals but I didn't know where I was so just did the intervals along the promenade into a bitch of a headwind. My AHR was not massive due to the WU and CD but the intervals averaged 169 and got to over 180 at times so a really tough workout and I felt it afterwards. I actually had to walk sideways down the stairs when I got back to the hotel my quads were so stiff. I did my usual stretching routine afterwards but did each of them 3 times rather than just the one then lay in a hot bath for half an hour.

    Saturday 9/6/2012

    30 Min Run, 4.80 km, Pace 6:15 m/km, AHR 131, MHR 143

I really needed this after the hard session the day before and this was the first time I actually realised the point of these short, easy sessions. My quads felt far better for it afterwards and it loosened them up brilliantly.

    Sunday 10/6/2012

    144 Min Bike, 63.50 km, Av Spd 26.4 km/h, AHR 137, MHR 168

My bike sessions have been woeful lately so I managed to hop on the bike and head out about 4.30pm for a quick spin. I felt absolutely brilliant for the entire workout and my legs just felt unbelievably strong. This was the first time I did longer than 90 minutes since the Tour De Foothills on April 15th and I still can't believe how great it went. Sometimes you just need days like this to remind you that the training works. Someone said that "cycling helps running but running does nothing for cycling" or something along those lines but I think the hard run sessions that I've been doing lately have really strengthened my legs and my engine feels really strong too so all in all a great day. :D:D

    47:30 Min Run, 9.00 km, Pace 5:17 m/km, AHR 156, MHR 168

Nice steady session before breakfast, felt good. I love these steady sessions, just enough to get the heart beating without leaving you shattered for the rest of the day.

    102 Min Bike, 43.55 km, Av Spd 25.68 km/h, AHR 128, MHR 162

Another quick spin, making a real effort to squeeze these in whenever possible.

    Tuesday 12/6/2012

    42 Min Run, 7.40 km, Pace 5:41 m/km, AHR 157, MHR 185

    10 min W/U
    8 x 2 min intervals, 45 sec rest
    10 min C/D

If my legs didn't already hate me, they certainly do now. I'm annoyed by the lack of information I can get using the basic HRM that I have. I only have an average pace for the entire workout but no idea what my pace was like for the hard intervals. The warm up and cool down were done at a really slow pace probably around 6:30 m/km so they really bring the average down. Hopefully though I'll be able to pull the trigger on a new Garmin 410 in the next few weeks and then I can drown in statistics and numbers.

Another snoozefest but feeling a little bit of tightness in my right hamstring so I think it actually helped to loosen it out a bit.

    Still hate these sessions though.

    60 Min Run, 11.13 km, Pace 5:23 m/km, AHR 164, MHR 162

Stupidity and laziness in equal measures by other people at work mean that I have to go in at 8am on a Saturday hence I was up at 5.30am for this session. It rained solidly for at least half of it and it was just pure anger and thickness that got me through it.

The workout itself actually felt good and I can really feel myself getting stronger since starting a bit of speedwork.

Home from work and straight out the door for a quick blast on the bike. Really enjoyed this one and felt strong all the way including some steady sessions in the drops pushing a big gear.

More importantly, my first full week in a long time and hitting all the targets even if I did get soaked for most of them.

    Monday 18/6/2012 (Contd.)

    67 Min Run, 11.35 km, Pace 5:54 m/km, AHR 152, MHR 176

The prescribed session was 10 min Easy, 44 min Steady, 10 min Easy. The first 5 minutes felt horrific so I decided to do my 30 min recovery run instead. Eventually my legs started to wake up so I decided to HTFU and just get on with it.

    11:30 Easy @ 142 bpm
    44:30 Steady @ 157 bpm
    11:00 Easy @ 145 bpm

Felt good when I finished, and glad that I did it.

    Tuesday 19/6/2012

    220 Min Bike, 86.87 km, Av Spd 23.5 km/h, AHR 130, MHR 171

Three steady sessions in two days followed by a long bike ride is probably not a great idea, especially considering all the bike sessions I've missed in the last few weeks. While it doesn't look too bad in terms of AHR or average speed, my legs just felt very tired and dead after 2 hours and I'll have to pay better attention to when I do my different workouts during the week.

    Wednesday 20/6/2012

    90 Min Run, 12.92 km, Pace 6:58 m/km, AHR 139, MHR 154

While all my other sessions are going great, hitting all the numbers, and improving on the paces prescribed while coming in under the AHR prescribed, I find the LSR's hardest to get right. The first 40 minutes were dreadful and it was basically a horrible shuffle with no rhythm and HR all over the place. Eventually it just clicked and I found a beautiful rhythm and just floated for the next 60 minutes and felt like I could just keep going forever. I don't know what my pace was for this section but it felt really good. Now, if only I could get it right from the start I'd be flying.

    10 x 2m Uphill Steady @ 165 BPM
    10 x 2m Downhill Slow @ 151 BPM
    10m CD Jog @ 141 BPM

Away again for work so had to head out of the B&B and look for a hill somewhere. Managed to find a small hill along the side of the motorway, hardly scenic but did the job I wanted. I'm surprised that the AHR wasn't higher for the intervals as I really thought I was pushing it.

Pure dullness. Jeez but I hate these and really think I'm only doing them for the sake of just ticking them off my training plan. Maybe I'd be better sticking to my 3 quality run sessions a week and adding another bike session instead or would I be better doing a steady effort for the 30 minutes?

Plan was to do 4 hours and hopefully hit the 100k mark or near enough to it. Was all going well until about the 75k when I started getting really bad pains in my left calf. I pulled over and stretched them, then sat for a few minutes, had something to eat and drink and hoped it would go away. No such luck, it got so bad that I had no choice but to pull over and call the girlfriend to collect me in the car.

The pain eased as soon as I stopped pedalling and I've been fine ever since. Now I'm really annoyed as I failed to finish an important session and I have no idea what was wrong with me or what caused it.

    10 min CD @ 141

Looked out the door to an overcast day with a slight mist in the air and thought it would be perfect weather for a run. The weather was brutal, really warm and humid with not a puff of wind. It was like running in a sauna and I was dripping with sweat.

Luckily, no re-occurrence of my phantom leg pains from yesterday although I did have other issues causing me pain. Lets just say there are 3 rolls of surgical tape around the house so that I never forget to use it before a run. But I forgot it anyway.

Now, off to Boot's for a tube of Germolene.

Hey pointer28 :) Been scanning your thread and just wanted to say thanks, and get a couple of, er, pointers if you don't mind (no pun intended!) :) I've just reached my first milestone of a 5k after starting running last month, and I'm not entirely sure what to do next apart from 'keep running'. That probably sounds lame...
    pointer28 wrote: »
Before Christmas I completed the C25K running plan, and loved it. Don't get me wrong, I found it hard and struggled at times, but I hate quitting and I swore I wasn't going to give up.

This sounds familiar, except the "loved it" part - because I'm not sure I did... but like you I didn't want to quit and pushed myself through each and every session, swearing at the end of each one that I couldn't do any more.

Having the '10k runner' iPhone app, while it sounds stupid, really helped the motivation because I didn't want to miss a session. I also wanted to achieve a 5k before the end of June, so mission accomplished there. This is one of the reasons I really don't know what to do next. I could keep going with the app, to 10k, but I genuinely don't feel ready, so...
    pointer28 wrote: »
Over the Christmas period I just continued with the 30 min runs 3/4 times a week with no increase in time just to acclimatise my body to running non stop on a regular basis.

...I'm now thinking of doing the same as you - how did you find this? (if you can remember back that far?!) :) I'd like to get to the stage I can run 5k without nearly passing out at the end of it, but I'm also worried about getting 'stuck' in a rut by not continuing to 'push on'.
    pointer28 wrote: »
I did a lot of research on the net and have devised my own training plan for the years. The basics are to start from a base level of 30 mins running and 2 hours cycling and increase my weekly volume by 10% each week for three weeks and then have a rest week of slightly over 50% of week 3. Week 5 will then restart at week 3 volumes and so forth. I will be working off time rather than kms. This will be made up of three bike sessions and three run sessions. The bike will probably be 2 x turbo and 1 x long ride at the weekend. For the running, I hope to run once a week on the roads to harden up my legs, once a week on the trails to work different muscles and once a week on a perfecly flat canal path which is great for pushing myself and has a very forgiving surface.

Again, I'd be interested in exploring something like this too, but I'm not sure I could keep to such a structured 'plan'... maybe I'm not ready to take running this seriously?!
    pointer28 wrote: »
I have the bare basics in terms of equipment. I have a Felt Z100 roadbike and a turbo trainer. I also have basic running gear and a Garmin FR60 HRM, plus the Garmin Fit App for measuring distances. Just this week, I had my gait analysis done and bought a proper pair of running shoes, Mizuno Wave Enigmas. While I would love lots of shiny new GPS watches and nice new wheels it just isn't going to happen any time soon.

I really think I should get my gait analysis done properly if I'm going to be "running" for 30+ minute sessions. Am guessing now is as good a time as any? Or am I getting ahead of myself?

As you can see I have a fair few doubts about continuing now - not that I don't want to, just that maybe I need more of a plan, or another goal, perhaps? Thing is unlike a lot of folks here I'm not that interested in running a marathon, or getting my times down, or being competitive or doing an IronMan... maybe that will change? or perhaps it's more about being able to 'go for a run' whenever the mood takes me, without it feeling like work... but that feels like such a long way off.
    pointer28 wrote: »
So, there we go. I'm sure it's all very dull to some of you, but I get great motivation from reading the logs on here, especially the IM stuff and, who knows, maybe someone in similar shoes to mine will get motivation from this.

Anyway, sorry for length, didn't want to hijack your excellent thread! It has certainly helped with my own motivation to date, so thank you - and thanks in advance for any pointers you can offer a 'newbie'! :)

    Hi Davenewt,

Thanks for the reply, glad to see I'm encouraging somebody. While I'm happy to encourage and help anyone I can, please remember that I'm only a few months ahead of you and by no means an expert.

If you've gone from 0 to 5k in a month you're not doing too badly and I'd be very happy with that. It took me 8 weeks to get to 5k.

If you don't feel like going straight on to 10k maybe do like I did and stick to the 5k for a month and get really comfortable with that before moving on. I had no way of measuring distance so I just stuck to 30 minute sessions which should be roughly about 5k anyway for a beginner. I would suggest changing these sessions about so that they don't get too boring. Make them a mixture of easy, steady and fast efforts. For example:

    Session 1
    10 m Easy
    10 m Steady
    10 m Easy

    Session 2
    10 m Easy
    5 x 2m Fast, 1m Walk
    10 m Easy

    Session 3
    30 m Easy

    Session 4
    10 m Easy
    8 x 1m Fast, 1m Easy
    10 m Easy

While you will have noticed that they don't all add up to exactly 30 m, they're not too far off and an extra minute or two won't kill you. I use a Heart Rate monitor to judge my efforts but if you don't have one, you should go on the RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) scale. You can get more information online about this but it's basically a scale of your effort from 1 to 10. 1 being asleep in bed to 10 being feeling like you're about to die, 9 being you're only going to vomit :D.

I try and do my easy runs at about 4, my steady efforts about 6 and my fast efforts at about 8. You're easy runs should feel embarrassingly slow and don't worry about the grannies on zimmer frames overtaking you. Steady runs should feel like hard work but not absolutely killer. These are my favourite session as I always feel like I've really achieved something and feel stronger afterwards with just a bit of tiredness in my legs but no pains.

If you can manage to do some cross training ie cycling or swimming it will help build your engine without battering your legs as you'll be using different muscle groups. Also, try different routes to avoid monotony and trail running is great if you have something suitable around you, completely different workout as you're forever up, down, left, right but I really enjoy them.

I would definitely recommend getting the gait analysis done as soon as possible. Try and go to a proper running store rather than a large chain store staffed by students. I won't name any names but you can guess what I mean, just because they offer gait analysis doesn't mean the staff have a clue. It didn't cost me anything and I now know exactly what type of shoes I need to buy in the future rather than just picking them based on colour. I can certainly recommend a top class shop in the midlands but there are plenty more around the country

Anyway, I've nearly written a novel here so I'll let you mull over what I said and if you feel like sending me a PM I'd love to help you out any way that I can.

Thanks so much, I will certainly mull that info over, very useful :) Gait analysis next I think... have heard good things about Runways in the city centre so will use that as an excuse to detour on way home from work one day soon.

Oh, and it's taken me 2 months to get to 5k... not 1... I started on 2nd May and did my 5k yesterday, 26th June. "Starting last month" sounds good tho doesn't it, hehehe.

Thanks again! Those mixed sessions and maybe some trail running might be worth exploring for sure... certainly need to mix things up a bit now I think. And I'm getting a bike soon on the b2work scheme as well, so looking forward to that, and some cross-training :)

www.met.ie - Some of the showers will be very heavy - especially across the midlands, Leinster and Ulster with the chance of thunderstorms and hail, along with the risk of further spot flooding.

me - Nah, it looks fine, I think I'll do my long run.

Who would you think was right? Fecking lashed down but it was warm and only served to cool me down a little and I had a really good run, very happy with the pace over my longest ever time and distance. Chuffed.

Not a great finish to the week. I was away working from Thursday until Sunday evening but unfortunately I was driving an hour each way morning and evening which would have meant getting up at 5 for a workout which was just unworkable when I wasn't getting home until 10 every evening (unless you're Oryx).

I kind of knew with my schedule for the weekend that this was likely to happen, so I made sure that I had my quality sessions done by Thursday so I only missed a 30 minute run and a 90 min bike. I also haven't had a recovery week in a while so maybe it wasn't a bad thing after all.

It's far easier when I'm in a hotel at the weekends as I'm back at the hotel earlier and can get up later, plus I have nothing better to do when I'm there alone anyway so I can usually get in an evening and a morning session. I'm in Ennis next weekend and I managed to book a hotel with a Gym and swimming pool, so no excuses for missing any sessions this week.

    246 Min Bike, 102.0 km, Av Spd 24.8 km/h, AHR 132, MHR 165

Long bike this morning. Weather was good apart from a shower that lasted about 10 minutes but no big deal. Felt good mostly except for one section into a headwind on a wide road. Just kept spinning the pedals and stuck it out until I got back onto the smaller, more sheltered roads. Average speed was better than I would have expected as I made sure not to push too hard and kept my HR low apart from a few hills.

I felt a small twinge in my leg similar to last week so ate plenty and took on lots of High 5 with electrolytes and it went away so I think it must have been a cramp brought on by poor hydration. Half a bottle over 3 hours was all I drank the last day and I also had about 3 large mugs of black coffee in the morning so that definitely didn't help either. In future I'll make sure to take on plenty of water in the morning instead of the coffee.

    Thursday 5/7/12

    56 Min Run, 9.20 km, Pace 6:05 m/km, AHR 149, MHR 171

    10 m Warm Up
    6 x 4 min Fast
    2 min Jog
    10 m Cool Down

    Friday 6/7/12

    66 Min Run, 12.00 km, Pace 5:30 m/km, AHR 162, MHR 176

Really tough steady session, HR started acting up in the lashing rain and dropped to 120 at one stage, then settled at an even 240 for a good half hour so I had to run by feel and to be honest I think I overdid it as I was completely cooked at the end.

    Sunday 8/7/12

    30 Min Run, 6.00 km, Pace 5:00 m/km, AHR 150, MHR 164

Hotel treadmill for this one, legs were flying but HR was very easy. Would have preferred to be closer to 160 bpm for this session but didn't feel comfortable going any faster on the treadmill. In hindsight I should have just went out the front door and down the road but it's done now.

    Totals for Week 27

    Run 222 mins
    Bike 246 mins

    YTD Totals

    Run 3797 mins
    Bike 5453 mins

Another two bike sessions missed this week due to travelling with work, but made sure that I got the long one done, and also got all four run sessions done. In other news, my shiny new Garmin 410 arrived and after lots of swearing at the computer I finally got it set up and ready to go. Now I'll hopefully have a better idea of my distances and paces rather than messing with Google Maps and a calculator.

    Monday 9/7/12

    100:14 Min Run, 16.04 km, Pace 6:15 m/km, AHR 145, MHR 155

Not too hot out there today so decided to do my long run as I can't handle it when it's any way warm at all.

First time using my new Garmin 410 and a few teething problems but it recorded the workout for me and gave me lots of stats and figures to look at. Unfortunately, I forgot to pair it with my HR monitor so my AHR figures are just a guess based on previous workouts. I forgot to bring any water with me so it got tough for the second half but I managed to get it done anyway and happy with the pace.

Long bike today, why I won't go as far as to call it easy, it was less hard than expected and once again my avg. speed increased.
