I would not touch a HP laptop with a barge pole. Bought three machines for friends through a so called friend who works for a HP preferred partner on the Richmond road, who shall remain nameless;).Two died within three months of the warranty expiration. Two machines out of three makes it a 66.6% failure rate after fifteen months out of the box.

for those willing to spend a little bit exttra again this looks like a bargain also ( along with other gaming laptops their for 500 or less, you dont need a s*** hot pc/laptop for gaming, this would pass most tests with an ok rating... )

If its raw/large picture editing, then the third one for sure. The Intel integrated graphics don't really do it justice. Then again if you're doing a lot of editing, I'd go for a core i5 with dedicated graphics, not a core i3.

What's your price budget? I'm looking around and the Acer 5750G seems to be the best bang for buck for an i5 laptop at the moment. If you're willing to wait until the new Ivy Bridge processors become universal on laptops, the integrated intel card in them is actually sufficient enough for photo editing etc.

Despite Argos incorrect description (its actually an i3 as I checked on UK site and a customer review pointed out it is listed incorrectly) so its just reduced to 454 which I think is pretty good and Which.co.uk list it high on their best buys list. Maybe Im just a sucker for eye candy as it looks better than many of the other clunky similar priced/spec models.

I am sorry for the confusion. I have checked and the specifications shown on the website are correct except for the CPU. The CPU is in actual fact the Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500.

Cheers Jarren, but ive noticed HP have gotten hammered on Review sites Which and TrustedReviews.com (mainly by customers not necessarily the reviewer) specifically on down the road unreliability - lots of stories about HP models failing several months down the line..... make me jitttery about it as otherwise thats a great spec/price you sent on.

I've worked for a couple of companies who used HP laptops. I'd say at least 75% had some fault before they were 3 years old.

If I had to put any brand on the top of the AVOID list it would be HP for sure.

I worked in tech support for at least 6 different clients over a 5 year period. I wouldn't recommend or suggest any particular brand is better or worse than any other. The nature of the technology is that it becomes obsolete before long- and with obsolescence comes failure. Unfortunately- we really don't build them like we used do. The company who put HPs machines together- is probably doing a similar service for 4 or 5 other major clients- singling out HP is unfair. I love Acer machines- yet you hear remarkably bad press about them. I'm currently typing on a 4 year old Acer 8930G....... My new laptop is a high spec'ed Lenovo. Since last December its been working for 1 week- and is due its next trip to Medion in Germany for repair next week sometime.

Id love to say Im more interested in spec, BUT i am very partial to eyecandy (as this laptop only needs to be a supplement to an i7 XPS desktop), the problem is I havent actually handled some of the models Im considering and there really is only so much you can get from a photo no matter how good. So anyone any feedback on my shortlist please as I have to purchase in next 24hrs. I really dont want to spend more than 500 Eur but for a mahine that is thin I would push just a little (hence the 5830T below). This will NOT be used for games. Just for Adobe CS4 (Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign etc)
1. Samsung RV520 (i3 2330M 4GB 15.6" 400GB HD) - tried one and like it - €460
2. Acer Timeline 5830T (i3 2330M 6GB 15.6" 750GB HD) only seen pics and reviews - €560
3. Lenovo B750 (i3 2370M 4GB 15.6 500GB HD) know nothing about this but it gets good reviews - €480
4. Acer 5750G (i3 2350M 15.6 320GB HD) this is the only one with dedicated Grpahics Card -NVIDIA GeForce GT 610M - 1GB) €500
5. Packard Bell Easynote TS11 (i5-2430M 4GB) €500 only considering this one as its an i5 coming in on budget.
But bottom line is I want LIGHT and THIN.
All feedback appreciated.

Thanks jarren, there are indeed but they are all way below the min sys requirements I need to at least 2Ghz clock speed, on the budget I have. Sadly I would need to double it to get close to speed/thin and light.

Hence the shortlist of 5 above.

The Lenovo are probably the most future upgradeable ones- very easy to remove baseplate, and all the components are standard (and they have an excellent online community).

Looking for the smallest/thinnest machine- is going to mean you have to make compromises elsewhere- most probably in battery capacity, but also possibly in thermal ventilation etc (ignoring processors/graphics etc). If you want the thinnest most portable thing around- get a tablet- or a high powered smartphone- I take notes on my HTC One X with a fullsize bluetooth keyboard- works perfectly fine.

You need to appraise what you need the machine to do- and what you're willing to compromise in........
