Silly Word Processing question. But really need help!!!

Hey guys. Silly question. But need help. Im writing on a word document and need to check mark a box on a document. When I right click on the mouse and click "add text" to insert "x" into the box. A small line appears and no text at all. Can anyone help!! Need to send off a document tomorrow and this has me at a loss. :o

Can you delete the box and replace it with the checked box symbol in Windings? (As in, "insert symbol", change the font in the box that pops up to Wingdings and the checked box is down at the bottom of the list)

Can you just left-click and the cursor stays in box?
Then just type X

Is it that the text box is too small? Can you make the font size smaller or the box bigger?
