Or, rather, The Idler Wheel is Wiser than the Driver of The Screw and Whipping Cords will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever do (!), is being released next week: it can be listened to in full here.

Having heard the first single off this a few weeks back, 'Every Single Night', I was a tad underwhelmed. Seven years in gestation, I expected to be blown away by its debut - having listened to the album in full (and again.. and again), however, I think this is just a weaker track from a stellar effort. I wasn't too enamoured with Extraordinary Machine when it came out, although it seemed to be universally well-received, but Idler Wheel for me is a complete return to form.

I think Apple got a bit lost in that grrrl-rock wave of the 90s, and was too often seen as just another angsty chanteuse, but I think she has the most fantastic vocal, great lyrics and plays a wicked piano.

If you get a chance, check this out. Daredevil, Left Alone and Hot Knife stand out for me.

I really like Extraordinary Machine. It kind of loses itself after the first half though. But the production on it is fantastic. There were a lot of problems to even get it to where it was (total remix, re recording and reproduced by the Moog Cookbook). But it was worth it I think. Really good lyrics too.

I was wondering when she'd get round to releasing a new record. This sounds alright so far. Fiona Apple is a lot better than she's given credit for by the wider public.

Maybe this is a dud remark, but my problem with EM was that it sounded a bit too over-produced; very polished or perfect or something, and coupled with a sound that was altogether more 'pop' than previous records, it was just my least favourite of her three. I preferred Brion's original version of EM, would have been nice if they had released that as a B-side. That said, it's still a great album, with a good few songs that I still listen to regularly. Definitely agree with your last comment.
