Saw a funny thing the other day. Picked up a copy of the autotrader I use to buy it religiously and stopped about 2 years ago. Anyway the funny thing was the car section in the south was almost completely gone. The cover price was €4 hidden in small below the barcode. Now I also had a few old copies from 2008 which was double the thickness up from the current up to date one but the price on the 2008 copy was €3.80. Now that is just madness!!

Gumtree is still free, so is buyandsell last time I checked (a few years ago I admit).
Gumtree does the exact same thing as donedeal and is free.

might seem harsh but after this news yesterday it has confirmed what i initially thought when i heard about the selling of the company. i can't help but think the shafting is only going to get worse so think i will get out now, leaving a small vote behind by unfriending them on facebook () and not placing any more ads with them. what's the alternatives then? i saw adverts and buy & sell mentioned here, does anyone here have any personal experience of selling on these? i like the idea of adverts as it is a part of boards and boards is brilliant, but i have heard bad things about being offered loads of crap in exchange for your items. i guess i will try both and see how i fare anyway

I realise my experiences are persornal, but il give two examples of experiences I have had with some selling sites in Ireland.

For one item I sell, (not a car) I have advertised them on donedeal , adverts, buy and sell and Gumtree. In April/May, I've solid about 20 units, 1 off adverts, 2 off Gumtree, 0 from buy and sell and 17 from donedeal. And another 4 reasonable leads that I might convert from DD. I didn't even get a call from the buyandsell add. When advertising on adverts yes you'll get more chancers than anywhere else, both advertisers (lookin for stupid offers) and potential buyers (giving stupid offers).

    2. I stuck a van up on DD, buyandsell and cars Ireland a couple of months back. I had 5calls and 3meetings set up within 1hour of putting it up on DD and sold it to the first person for asking price with some luck. I left it up on B&S and CI just to see what the response would be, again not a dickie bird from buy and sell and one email from cars Ireland from who I'd call at the very least a very wishfull chap.

Overall from my experience there is no comparison in converting sales to donedeal, free advert sites never seem to do as well unless their severely restricted (thats how I imagine Gumtree is still around) . And although I like what adverts are trying to do, its to easy for someone to type an email/post/offer and feel no commitment or even interest in a product. When someone picks up the phone to call its much more lightly their actually interested. DD seems to encourage this. Or just attracts people actually willing to part with any money....

We advertised a Hyundai Accent on buyandsell.ie in March and had it sold inside a week with a stack of calls so a different experience to you.
We also sold a kids pram (slightly off topic but your talking about response to non car ads) recently on buyandsell.ie and we were blizzarded with calls and a bloke from Wicklow ended up travelling up to us to buy it. I like it cause the ad goes into their paper too, good value for 3 euro.

As a matter of interest, what do you sell if it not cars?

Hang on...... The ad you put on the site, also goes on their paper?

    Awesome! Off to Buy&Sell I go :D

Even 5 euro is not really big money, you can still advertise your car for free on carsireland.ie carsforsaleireland.ie cbg.ie, gumtree.ie etc.

Carsireland is pretty poor to be honest.

You don't seem to be able to pay for an advert by PHONE anymore with DD this was their USP, now you need a card, and this will put off loads of sellers.

Carsireland has come on in leaps and bounds btw

I think you can pay by mobile phone

its not just €5, its €5 every time you want to bump your ad up.
You can bump your ad up one day and the next day its on page 10!!

I paid €3 every day for a month to sell my car which is €90.
    At a fiver thats €150.

So its not just a fiver as many here are saying!

You can definitely pay for a €3 ad on buyandsell.ie by phone, not sure about carsireland.
You'd need a phone made out of melted credit cards to pay by phone for $$carzone$$. donedeal have given up this option for a lot of phones now with their increase ad cost.

    Vodafone and o2 ONLY.

Can't do it from landline or Meteor.

ETA: Changed now, All networks accepted but with surcharges for anyone not 02 or Vodafone.

This donedeal plan is sounding more and more fatal.

Ads are going up fast as ever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭cdublin

It depends which you consider more greedy though, charging two more Euro on some of your advertisments, and 2 euro less on others. Still being cheaper that most your viable competition.

Or is it greedier for someone not to want to spend a fiver to sell their car.... ?

I advertise the same things on Adverts, Buyandsell , Donedeal, Gumtree and a couple of others. Donedeal sells about 6 or 7 times more than the rest of those sites Combined (if not more).. so there's no comparison for me.

Still interested in knowing what you sell if its not cars???
If you sell the stuff to the public and have advertised it on so many sites then surely its not a secret!!!
I find it hard to believe that you get a response 6/7 times greater than ALL other sites combined.
Maybe when we know what you sell it'll make a bit more sense?
What is it your selling again??

The text search box on Done Deal is what I use to find what I am looking for. Hence people have started manipulating this by placing extra words like 'toyota' in an ad for a Nissan.
Why not place your an ad for a Nissan with a detailed description in Electronics. = Car ad for €1.

The way I see it all ads have just got cheaper on DoneDeal, of course this will destroy it for everyone. But in the mean time I'll get cheap advertising.:)

Jesus, hopefully donedeal will use the extra revenue to stamp out this crap.....
You g:mad:et a great irish website which is nearly guaranteed to sell for you, and you are out to ruin it for everyone...........now thats typical ireland....

I think we should come back here in a years time and then take a look at whether done deal made a mistake. I'm convinced they have. I'm sure there are some more changes coming too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,185 ✭✭✭NewApproach

Why shouldn't they increase their price if they think it is a wise business decision? It is their site, they can set prices as they wish and they are forcing no one to advertise with them.

If you think €5 is too much, then use one of the alternatives, instead of whining about it on an internet forum.

I really don't mind a 5eu instead of 3, but I would love them to hire at least one fella who will sit down and check all car ads and take off all which use quick search bull****. It's not hard to do.

Sick of looking for Sti/wrx and getting 1.4 civics, Volvos, tdi garbage.

The real issue here is fixing the crap search they have. if it didnt rely on search words there wouldn't be a problem.

that is too, but they will need to remake whole system now, seeing as they are lazy already - it wont happen. I still prefer carzone to browse cars, but its a dead website at this stage. wheres in donedeal all you can do is use search option. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 690 ✭✭✭Hunter21

Only being able to pay for the ad through a mobile is a pain! Had to go to town today for 5 euro credit to bump up an ad.

Why fix it if its not broken!! Ive no issue with the 5 euro part just the way I must pay it

The goal of every single company is to maximise profits. Simple.
    mickdw wrote: »

The voice of reason. The only way we can tell if the increase of the price to €5 for a car ad will increase their profit is to wait and see...
    mickdw wrote: »

I expect they have not made a mistake. I expect they'll have sold a similar number of car ads and so increased their turn over by 60% :)

Done deal is no longer irish, Schibsted bought 50.09% of it.
There are lots of free sites to sell your stuff dealmonkey, olx, advert, to name but a few.

i cannot believe we are still discussing a €2 increase on a brilliant advertising site. And two euro decrease in lots of other areas.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,659 ✭✭✭✭dahamsta

Brilliant? Did we start talking about another site?

DoneDeal is incredibly badly designed, engineered and managed. It can be useful, but it could be a lot more so if they actually listened to feedback, rather than feeding people a line saying they are, when it's obvious they're simply trying to maximise profits. (As is their right, but please, don't insult my intelligence with the bullsh1t reasoning.)

It's certainly good in some areas, but there's no clear leader in classifieds in Ireland, and none of them qualify for "brilliant" in any category. Unless you count "most felt" or "most illiterates" as categories.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,828 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I agree with your criticisms, but fact is that everybody uses donedeal. And that in itself (combined with that it is cheap) makes this service brilliant

It has never been easier, cheaper and quicker to sell anything in Ireland

Put up a well priced car even with some serious problems / defects and it sells within minutes or hours...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭2pack

yes its donedeal getting greedy and i hope buy and sell and others out take advantage of the situation.
As one member stated if you dont agree with the price dont use them and i for one will not anymore, has not improved at all and has been going downhill for the past 4-5 months anyway...
you cant pay by landline anymore in the vehicle section just mobile/paypal/card so whats that about
