Securing rods on tents?

Hey, just a completely dumb question but it's ages since I've gone camping and actually can't remember how to secure the main rods of the tent to the gap/slot on the bracket attached to the bottom of the tent. As in after you have the rods put through the tent how do you make sure the rod stays in the circular slot on that…
