When is the Valve E3 confrence anyone know?

Hoop dreams of getting a Half Life announcement this year.

Finally caught up on the whole thread, some amount of sh*te comments to scroll through...

Anyway, Last of Us looks brilliant, Watch_Dogs looks amazing, resi 6 looks awful (biggest disappointment for me). I'm mad to know more about Beyond but only because I really enjoyed Heavy Rain. Tomb Raider looks a bit too 'on-rails actiony'

Still need to cath up on the sony conference but will have to wait til after work. Well jealous of Helix being in LA for this!

Valve arent even at E3, most we got out of them recently is DOTA2 is fully free-to-play (outside of a cash shop for costumes for the heroes) and CS:GO is releasing for $15 (so put through the video-game industry convertor....around €20 probably).

EDIT: beaten to the puch by Kiith on the 1313 trailer, looks :D:D:D:D

Am I the only one who thinks the last of us looks like a zombies expansion pack for uncharted? Even the protagonist looks like Drake, same motions, same 3rd person camera, same graphics.

GOW looks like the hack and slash equvilent of Madden / COD being the same thing over and over.

Its made by naughty dog, same developers of uncharted. Nothing wrong with the uncharted engine imo.

Well it's from Naughty Dog and since Uncharted had fantastic graphics and animations, only makes sense to use that existing tech. I think this actually looks more survival horror than resi 6. Having played I Am Alive, the simple concept of 'I have 1 bullet but there are 2 bad guys' works so well and even though this turned into a bit of a shoot em up, it definitely looks like it's on the right tracks to making a game about survival. Plus it looks very very pretty.

Well Ive already played God of War: Ascension....it was called God of War 1/2/3

As for The Last of Us....meh. Looks pretty but far too scripted from whats shown to be this "amazing survival game" everyone is claiming it is. Running out of bullets in a gunfight and having to rely on melee...erm yeah, thats almost every shooter Ive played. And if I sound like Im going hard on TLoU, well its because I found Uncharted to be massively overhyped and I see the same here. People were claiming TLoU to be the best game ever months ago before we saw anything and then what I did see was pretty bland, just a 3rd person shooter polished up by Naughty Dog.

Last of Us: Looks good but seems a bit too trigger point action for me

    RE6: Massive Disappointment

Tomb Raider: Looks good but again a bit too on the rails

Splinter Cell: Love these games so cant get enough of them :)

Tomb Raider has me interested but the 'rapey' subject matter is a bit discomforting.

I think it was a ballsy move tbh, its what you'd expect from a movies narative so why not expect it in a cinimatic game? There needs to be real threat and it doesnt get much more real that potential rape / murder.

Gaming narative shys away from tough topics far too often , topics that we are introduced to daily from soaps to movies etc. As long as the age rating is appropriate I am all for pushing the acceptable boundries.

So? The GoW games are hack & slash and fun ones at that. Theyre not gonna turn it into an FPS or anything.
And what do you expect from a survival game? Instead of ammo convservation and melee attacks would you prefer a giant fish that sprays cheese just to be different?

Absoutely makes sense to use the same engine but that doesnt mean the two games have to look so similar. I was cheking the twitter stream for the showing and there were huge amounts of people whoo hadnt heard of the last of us and asking "is the uncharted 4?".

There was no need for them to do another over th shoulder 3rd person game that looks so similar. Even the whole "stumble mvement" of the protagonist looks idential to how Drake moves. Its just dissapointing they played it so safe imo, they have great talent but if your making a new IP then actually make it feel new.

Some mechanical changes would even have worked like for instance if you had no inventory and anything you wanted you had to get from your daughter by litterally calling or going over to her. Could have led to some great combat and puzzle scenes. Using infected as a weapon could have worked such as luring one into the area filled with hostile survivors.

For me graphically and gameplay wise last of us seems no different to uncharted, only the narrative differs.

Well it remains to be seen how they handle this but the immaturity of most western developers and their poor writing would suggest that this could be a disaster. I would like to be pleasantly surprised but if you want to handle that subject matter, you better have better writers than I've seen at Crystal Dynamix so far.

Why such a rush for a new console? Other than Nintendo I don't think we need any more at all for the moment. Under the TV is full enough as is! :)

Yea, the current gen have at least another year or two left in them.

why the rush for a new gen, did you watch the e3 confrences? everything is a bloody sequel or video streaming service, the 360 is coming up to its 7/8th year, thats just stagnating gaming as a whole, i need some new ips damn it :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,014 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

I'm quite interested in seeing how powerful the next gen consoles would be. It'd be cool if it could produce in-game graphics as good as say, Diablo III's cutscenes. Looking at Tomb Raider's playthough at E3, it looks good but it also looks like a 2009 game...like already inferior to Uncharted. I'll still definitely get it :)

And a new console gen would do that? I doubt it, you might get the few launch titles that "take advantage of the hardware" but after that it would be CoD 84, Battlefield 39.182, FIFA 20174683465836473 and such, but just at a higher resolution.

So? The GoW games are hack & slash and fun ones at that. Theyre not gonna turn it into an FPS or anything.

I'd prefer the feel I got from the trailer at the VGA's last year where your gun was a last resort, to be used when you are well and truely tromboned. i was imagining something like Haunting Ground where you have to run and escape most situations, not an bunch of corridors with spawning enemies to be easily taken down by crouching around a corner. In the demo they showed, the backup group follow the gunshots to your location. Would they wander in if the fight with the first group prolonged or does the soundbite play and they spawn round the corner once you hit an invisible checkpoint?

Obviously theres more to be seen but I was anticipating huge open areas with walls to climb, buildings to ransack, groups of enemies to attack or avoid, maybe even stealth elements that MGS had running over a decade ago. Something similar to what I Am Alive tried (but it also had its problems, mainly you HAD to fight everyone). All I have seen of TLoU is another corridor shooter with prettier than last years graphics. I would like to be proven wrong, but as a first impression of the games direction its pretty bad.

The Tomb Raider trailer had me thinking "wow, finally, after 15 years, a Tomb Raider game that looks slightly interesting." I played the first one, I have never in all my days been so bored by a game and nothing I've seen since has changed my mind about what's involved in them until now. I think it's not entirely unfair to suggest that games like Uncharted and maybe even Far Cry have pointed out to them where to go with a game like this and how to manage it.

Not fussed about another console, PC gaming is all I'm doing at the moment, my 360 is gathering dust - I have a pile of games that I was once over the moon enthusiastic about (AC:R, SR3 for example) that sit there unfinished because it is such an inferior platform - it annoys me having to use it, to wait for it, to have to listen to how much noise it makes and to have to use a controller. Then you see that MS are continuing to push out "living room" services for it which will never be useful to us in Ireland because we don't have the other services it's designed to compliment (ok, so we have Netflix, big woop, I've already seen most of what's on it that's of interest to me).

Watch Dogs - frak me that looks like it has the potential for greatness.

Very interesting to see THQ selling the UFC rights to EA - yet another step for EA Sports' progress to being the only name in sports sims/games.

Here is the official statement from UFC about the move

It's funny how at one point Dana White said he would fire any fighter who worked with EA but I guess money talks. Plus UFC will finally get Randy Couture back! I think it's a great move as EA MMA was just class, just had a bad franchise to run off (Strikeforce). Can't wait for EA UFC!

GET EA TO IMPROVE SERVERS !!!!

I think there def is a need for the next gen sooner than later for one simple reason - graphics. Some might moan that graphics arent everything ... true , but they are the main driver of new hardware sales whether we like it or not. Im sick to death of watching these beautiful trailers of gameplay like medal of honourand star wars 1313 with excellent lighting, textures and aniamtions while all the time knowing its running on a crazy powerful PC rig and when those games eventually some to console they'll look nothing like the trailer.

If you want to answer the question "why the rush for new consoles"... compare battlefield 3 on console to the PC version and theres your answer. Map size, player limits and graphical fidelity are vastly superior on PC.

There is little doubt surrounding the fact that if we did not have the economic difficulties globally over the last few years we would probably have a set of new generation consoles already on the cards.

I wouldn't be expecting a new console until 2014 at earliest now.

I'd like to see BF3 even run on a 6-7 year old PC, never mind at reduced graphics levels.

With a PC you need to upgrade every 3 years tops to stay at the top end. Consoles while compromised and optimised have to make do for 7-8 years.

I think current consoles can hang in there for another year or 2 just fine.

It's apples and oranges at the end of the day. You can only compare a PC to a PC and a console to a console.
