Smallest home heating oil tank?

    If oil theft is becoming a problem nationwide how are people securing tanks in properties that are not occupied full time?

    I was thinking that if you were only in a house at the weekends you could install a small tank and top it up whenever you arrived in...

    This leads to two questions:

    How much oil can you safely/legally transport in the boot of the car?
    How long would 2-3 gallons last when away and with the timer set just to keep damp out of the place?

    Currently heating a house with coal, so I've no problem with there being an added chore of having to top up the tank every so often while there...

    Crazy idea?

    You can buy a 25ltr drum of kero that will easily see you through the weekend.

    It will also be easy to mount high for the boiler.

    The only issues you will have is airlocks but you will figure these out soon enough and be a pro.

    If it were me. I would look at adding an additional tap to my tank at home and take the 25ltrs from that. If someone gets far enough to take from your home tap you might as well make it easy or the damage they may cause would be more expensive.

    Ya I was thinking of a set up like that alright. The tank at home is fairly secure, or at least in view of many neighbours windows. You'd probably go through filters pretty quick too?

    If you went to your local 'metal fabrication shop' they would be only too delighted to make a small tank for you 50-100ltrs?

    With a good metal tank security is increased, only problem is I have seen theft where they just pull/cut the pipework from the tank to get the fuel, but being it's so small I assume they wouldn't bother.

    25ltr drums you get are not suitable to adapt for oil storage, the material will degrade, you will get increased condensation (water) in the fuel etc. and I would imagine your household insurance would be null and void! (ask your insurer)
