Ross SD satellite kit in Aldi

    Aldi are advertising this kit in Ireland. This was available from B & Q in UK for £40 and be warned this is a horrible little receiver.
    There is no scart, only 3 phono outputs so no RGB.
    There is no teletext either VBI or on screen display.
    Two of the transponders on Astra 1 cause it to crash and reset if you do a scan. Ross were not helpful only saying to delete those 2 transponders. They also said there was no software update to fix it.

    A far cry from Tevion receivers Aldi used to sell.

    Also only SD. Even if you don't have an HDTV you need a DVB-S2 receiver, which all do HD and also SD if it has SCART.

    It should be illegal to sell SD only or HD set box without SCART for SD + HDMI for HD setboxes for Terrestrial or Satellite as they are obsolete and pointless.

    was at a job this morning where a guy tried to install one of them today himself he had not a clue what he was at ,the box was a nitemare to tune and picture quality was bad the dish was not to bad,it was fairly sturdy ,would not recomend it at all

    Poorly made boxes, slow at changing channels and cheap capacitors in the power supplys have seen a few power supplys fail after 13 months typical ..

    Does anyone know of a decent dish and set top box which can pick up the Astra sat'? I was thinking of using it as an option for TV upstairs. I do have UPC but if I were to get good reception I might think of getting rid of uPC. Has anyone done this?

    B&Q in Tallaght have the Ross HD satellite kit (including dish, 60cm IIRC) for €59.50. Far better value than the Aldi one.

    Only pain with these is the almost constant retuning when stations change transponder...

    Rich the advised setup is a TV aerial and Saorview box for the Irish Channels and a quality dish and freeSAT approved proper box for the UK channels. See http://www.freesat.co.uk for proper boxes.

    Cheap boxes are not good value, as they lose channels and are very hard to setup. For the ordinary user a freesat box and a decent non perforated dish along with a TV with integrated Saorview receiver or a seperate Saorview box, gives 95% of the best stations in an easy to use setup than would still be of use in 10 years time.

    If you drop UPC you save a minimum of 23 per month. That has to be worth a 200 to 300 Euro once off investment in cheap gear.

    A bargain basement satellite system is a bad long term investment.

    Thanks, appreciate the reply. Yeah, I wouldn't go near the cheap stuff TBH.
    It would be nice to do a DIY job and get most of what I already get or view. Anyway, a lot of stuff these days can be viewed via PC!
