Nipped over during lunch and took a few recon snaps for all your information...

    206973.jpg

The roadworks start approximately 300 - 400 metres after Hollywood lakes golf club and continue for just under 2km towards Ballyboughal. You can see the start signs in the distance on the above photo.

The council are currently working on the right side of the road laying the chippings as can be seen here:

    206974.jpg

Other areas on the 2km stretch look like this:

    206975.jpg

    and this near the end:

The paths made by cars, trucks, etc seem fairly ok to put the bike down. It's either side of them that could pose problems!

I can always get him to marshal and I have a brush for him. But I don't think he would be much good at either.

Aren't loose chippings there for a reason? Would sweeping them away be a bit of a no no?

BTW, is there still a big pothole on that fast sharp corner on the decent from the Nags Head onto the Naul Road?

I am so not looking forward to suffering up the Nags Head three times. This is one for the skinnymalinks methinks.

Of the Big/Powerfull rider on a lone breakway??

Where the road has been resurfaced yes - the photos Lusk Doyle has put up suggests they have resurfaced the side of the road you will not be racing on, with loose chippings speading over to the previously quite smooth surface you will be racing on. It may be helpful to clear those off, but I suspect it would be too big a task tbh

Loose chippings will hopefully slow down a few of the powerhouses on the fast run into Ballyboughil. Beats trying to drag the legs out of them on the climb.

I wouldn't be holding out for that if I was you!

Where's the finish tonight? is it the white line about 2/3 of the way up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,246 ✭✭✭Hungrycol

This course has three finish lines. I intend telling no one which one is the right one and if anyone asks I'm going to tell them the wrong one.

Makes feck all difference to me , no matter which one they use there'll be 30-40 over it before I get there:(

The left turn coming down from Nags Head onto naul- ballyboughal rd has a lot of loose chippings in middle of car tracks

Missed it tonight as was too busy at work.
Hope all went well and there was a deserving winner ..

Just back, descent from the Nags Head to the village was brutal with chippings, noone went off though one of the UCD lads went gardening for a bit!

Group 2 worked better than any time I have raced this year tonight and everyone put in a decent effort, it wasn't enough to stay away though and we were caught just before making the left turn onto the old N1 for the last time.

I stuck with the new faster group til the climb and finished 30 secs odd behind the winner in probably 20-30 somewhere. Good race, legs well shredded, fine evening for it, and everyone back in one piece.

No-one went off from your group you mean...

... one guy from Group 4, taking it very gingerly, went too wide and onto the grass, from which he did not return until scratch had gone by. It's quite impressive, going over the handlebars at less than 15kph (he's OK)

I was given the task of doing a recce of the corner before a decison was taken on whether to change the course (none of the other options were particularly attractive). My report back was that if we were to use the course then everyone had to be given instructions to slow down (it's the fastest corner on the course) under threat of being reported. I managed to sweep the smooth tarmac before the new surface, and moved all the loose chippings off that bit.

The message got through, and barring the 2 incidents on the grass everything went well on the corner, with no-one taking any silly risks, so thanks to all riders for taking the common sense approach

Not sure what the state will be for the Swords GP on Sunday - there must be a possibility of a change of course if the chippings are not swept up before then. The soles of my shoes were embedded with small chippings and tar

This was my first race back after putting my back out so I was delighted all went well and everything held up fine. I did feel a bit underpowered but I think that's just from not having done much racing.

Group 4 was caught by scratch on the run down from Ballyboughil second time round. This meant we had the pleasure of two efforts up the climb at scratch pace. I held on OK the first time, although I picked a bad wheel and had to go round and make up a bit of a gap at the top. The last time up I couldn't go with the pace on the less steep bit at the bottom and never closed the gap. I made up a couple of places on the steeper bit and think I got ninth.

Anyway it was a good night's work and I think I can build from here for the second half of the season.

Special mention for Lusk Doyle - his improvement from last year is incredible. I couldn't hold his wheel the last time up the climb and he rode the last lap at a serious pace. Now he just needs to stop taking the piss and join us in Group 4.

Thanks to marshalls, Joe, Breda and everyone who put on the show. I even thought the loose chippings added something!

I reckon there were only 3 Swords riders in the points (ie top 10), including Lusk Doyle in 8th and manwithaplan in 9th. At this rate the club league could be quite open this year, as visitors seem to be picking up most of the big points. In fact, the extra points picked up marshalling could make quite a difference - anyone marshalling every race would have an outside chance of winning the league, or being 1st vet;)

Had that conversation with him on the cycle home.I think he will be making a statement shortly once he gets his race report done

I'd say Adam is a racing certainty. When he shows up in a A4 race, the rest can go home!

there is still one ahead of you killalanerr, and you need to watch out for that crafty RobFowl - he's probably even better than you at sandbagging his way into the slower groups ...;)

Different focus this year. Work looking like i'll be hit or miss at making the races.
Tour of Louth with bcmf looking like the next target as well as track accreditation.
Was a bit embarrassed to share 1st Vet with Paul Kennedy a few years ago when I got points from easy groups and he got his from scratch...

Also Ras and exams meant 2 weeks completely off the bike (although 26 letters after the name now which the Ma is well proud of !!)

Felt lethargic all day yesterday and comtemplated G3 given the course. Decided G4 when I knew scratch weren't joining us like last week. I was going well and felt comfortable for the first lap. I know compared to last week we weren't going fast enought to stay away from sratch but was still surprised to see them come through so soon on the flyover, thought we might last until the second time up the Nags Head. While the increase in pace was handleable a few disasters happened for me; I started getting a huge pain in my right foot when my little toe and his neighbour went completely numb, I got dropped on the second time up the Nags and on trying desprately to chase back on I got a huge stitch and had to stop. Game over for me. Very disappointed but then again sometimes your good and sometimes you're bad.

Big surprise for me was seeing Longsocks losing form in lasts night race in G4. He's normally very strong on the hills but seemed not to be firing on all cylinders last night, got dropped the first time up but must have tagged back on when scratch came through.

On holliers for the next week so enjoy the Swords Open races. I intend feeding and watering Hungrycol :)

Thanks to Joe and Breda the marshalls for another brilliantly run race especially the ones who shout encouragement! Sorry Ronan I don't know what you shouted at me on the Nags head but I'm sure it was vary encouraging ;)

Not sure that's allowed Killalanerr. There's was lots of agro about someone doing this last year. Something about issues with insurance.

He's just getting stronger and better each week. He looks be a good all rounder.

I've not seen him at any open races since Stamullen I think - maybe he's been off the bike for a while?
