Ebay seller sends wrong part and offers 80% refund

    As title suggests, purchased a computer part which was listed as compatible with my laptop on ebay. Paid with paypal. Turns out it is the wrong part (too small) for my laptop. Seller has offered 80% refund and not collecting item. The seller does not have a part suitable for my laptop so cannot replace the part with the correct one.

    I assume I can tell seller that I want a full refund (and obviously offer to send back item with them paying for p&p). Am I correct in thinking that I can lodge a dispute and claim back the entire amount (including P&P) if they refuse? They are a fairly active seller on ebay.

    Just want to make sure that I can go down the dispute/refund route if I tell them no to the 80% refund.

    You are entitled to a full refund of what you paid, but you will have to pay for the return postage yourself. This is both eBay and Paypal policy, that the returner pays for the return, even if it was the sellers fault. There's nothing you can do about that unless the seller agrees to pay for the return. You can ask, but neither Paypal nor eBay will back you on that.

    If he isn't offering a refund, start a dispute in Paypal, and take it from there.

    The item was £22.50. 80% is £18 so i will lose £4.50 here which is just slightly more than it would cost for me to ship the item back.

    Can I just charge back my credit card?
    I have proof that they are accepting responsibility here and only offering 80% back. Would like to at least know this so that I can ask for 100% back plus the cost of shipping the item back to them (if they want it back).

    File a dispute with Paypal. They will either refund you, or force the seller to.

    threaten him with a paypal dispute, it doesn't look good on his ebay record

    You would presume the 80% would be paid on the successful return of the part.

    They will insist on the buyer returning the product and paying for it (by registered post) themselves, which is part of the problem as that would be more than the 20% loss being asked for right now. A Paypal dispute will not help the buyer in this case.

    Realistically, it will have no impact on the seller. As mentioned, the dispute process will not help the buyer in this case.

    I accepted the 80% in this case and it has already been refunded. Its a pretty unfair policy from ebay/paypal since it cost me even though it was entirely the sellers fault.
