The 175-year-old Pulitzer Prize-winning New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper will reduce the number of days it publishes a print edition to three a week, making the Louisiana city the largest in the United States without a daily newspaper.

Its the beginning of the end for print journalism and journalism as we know it. Athough its been coming for awhile this will be the first major newspaper to stop printing daily in favour of supplying the news online.

Although i never read the newspaper, i think its kinda a sad shift in times as we move further into the digital era. The world is moving fast, it didnt seem so long ago you would get the news in newspaper in the morning and you would have to wait till the 6 o'clock news to get updated on the latest news...the World War 3 could have broken out in those hours and you would have been none the wiser.

I used to buy a newspaper every day, now I just buy them on a Saturday or Sunday. Not because I get my news online but because I don't get the time to read them anymore and get my news on the radio instead.

I like the newspaper because there's no reader comments underneath which inevitably draw my attention and make me hate people.

I have three orignal newpapers in frames ( Death of JFK ,Man Lands On The Moon , John Lennon Murdered ) so that's my tribute to the printed newspaper , which I now mainly read online .

I only need ''Ireland ,Winners of The Euro Championship '' to complete the set .:pac:

Major journalism in general has decreased over the years. What used to be an industry filled with hundreds of companies has now dwindled to less than ten major corporations running the entire industry. Print journalism was a cash cow up until the internet inducing standards to decline in order to make bigger profits. Owners allowed these standards to decline, failed to innovate the industry and hired brutal journalists to replace quality journalists. Newspapers are now to far behind to catch up with the burgeoning new media and do not offer a product of value any longer.

The recent scandals to rock Britain have shown up modern day journalism for what it is. Newpapers are now generally full of opinion sections from supposed celebrities which are of no practical or intellectual value. The newpaper owners wrote their own epitaph years ago.

Made it all the more funny though when they couldn't beat the Yanks or Algeria and only scraped a one nil win over lowly Slovenia.

Owners sacrificed quality in pursuit of profit, that's what killed the newspaper, not the internet.

OP why wait for the newspaper tomorrow when you can get news on demand online. Print journalism may be on a downward spiral but I'm sure the same amount of journalists will be needed if not more to keep up with the worlds news updates.

That is what I meant, I missed the comma after internet.

I meant it was making huge money until the internet came along and it was this pursuit of greater profit which induced standards to decline.

I still buy two newspapers a day,one in the morning and one in the evening.Sad to see the demise of printed media,though it's inevitable thanks to the massive decline in journalism standards and major technology breakthroughs over the last few years.The idiocy of the general public who would rather read about Z list celebrities then actual news hasn't helped either.

I like to flick thru the metro in the morning, but can't remember the last time I bought a paper or magazine. I catch the news online, and the daily mail is great for my celeb fix :-D

Simply because its plain wrong to try and take your laptop to the toilet. Thats why newspapers will never die off

Its just about impossible to do much if any work on a tablet or phone, they are commuter toys. You need a keyboard.

On the newspapers thing, while they still have some money in the bank they should partner up with the telcos and get behind free metropolitian wireless, with a faster paid version which includes higher speeds and subscriptions to all their newspapers, delivered right to your client of choice.
