XP freezing if I right click on desktop

I'm trying to change the background on the desktop of an EEE PC which has XP as the O/S.

However, when I right click on the desktop, the system freezes & requires a hard shut down - holding down the power button.

Sometimes it gives an error message about Windows Explorer not being able to perform this task???

The machine is nearly new & has had minimum use.

    Any thoughts??? Thanks.
