Gift arrived from america, will it be charged by customs?

Hey guys quick question.

My uncle in America sent me an old laptop he doesn't use anymore and declared the item as a gift with a declared value of $400. Will customs charge me to import it ?

I read over the various information at revenue.ie but it didn't give a clear answer to my scenario.

Yes my uncle, when you say "stung", how bad are we talking?\

Edit: Nevermind, just checked via track and trace and the item is in my towns location now so I guess customs left it. Thank god. It would have defeated the purpose of my uncle giving me a laptop if I had to pay a huge amount to even receive it.

I paid about 17-18 euro on about hundred dollar item (includes a 5-6 euro charge for the service) so probably looking at 60 euro

dutycalculator site will give you a beter idea.

edit: the courier/an post will look for the money before handing over the item!

Just because it's in your town doesn't mean you won't be charged. If the value is declared there's a big chance you will be charged when the postman delivers it.

There have also been cases where the courier service will send you an invoice a few days after delivery.
